JOB SUMMARY

The primary purpose of your job position is to plan, organize, develop, and direct the overall operation of our Nursing Services Department in accordance with current Federal, State, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations that govern our facility, and as may be directed by the Administrator and the Medical Director, to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is always maintained.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Develop and update annually, or as required, written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing department.

2. Recruit, train, evaluate, counsel, and terminate nursing personnel as required, maintaining appropriate supportive documentation.

3. Develop, direct, and evaluate an ongoing Quality Assurance Program for the Nursing Department that will support the overall Health Center goal of maintaining a superior rated facility.

4. Make routine rounds of nursing units to ensure that all nursing personnel are performing their duties in accordance with acceptable nursing standards.

5. Attend and participate in continuing education programs to ensure continued professional development and knowledge of the latest governmental rules and regulations.

6. Identify residents who qualify for Medicare coverage by developing an understanding of Medicare requirements relative to the skilled nursing facility.

7. Assist the administrator in the development and monthly review of the nursing section of the Health Center Budget.

8. Oversee the operation of the Wellness Clinic ensuring satisfactory performance of the Clinic Manager.

9. Develop work assignments and schedule duty hours to ensure that nursing care is provided to meet the daily needs of each resident.

10. Perform administrative duties such as completion of medical and governmental reports and required documents, payroll, and serving on committees as required.

11. Direct, develop, and review preliminary and comprehensive assessments of the nursing needs of each resident.

12. Coordinate and participate in the development of each resident's written interdisciplinary plan of care.

13. Develop and implement procedures for the safe operation of all nursing service equipment.

14. Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

Skills, Abilities & Competencies:

SPECIFICATIONS:

1.    Must possess, as a minimum, a nursing degree from an accredited college or university.

2.    Must have a minimum of two years’ experience as a supervisor or Director of Nursing in a long-term care facility, or related health care facility.

3.    Must have a valid and current R.N. License for the state of Florida.

4.    Ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action.

5.    Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations, and guidelines that pertain to long term care.

6.    Ability to plan, organize, develop, implement, and interpret the programs, goals, objectives etc. that are necessary for providing quality care.

7.    Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.

8.    Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.

9.    Must function independently, have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with residents, personnel, and support agencies.

10.  Must be able to relate to, and work with, the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and at times hostile people within the facility.

11.  Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language.

12. Current and valid CPR certification required.

OSHA COMPLIANCE STATEMENT

In compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) requirements relative to precautions toward preventing the spread of blood borne (Hepatitis B virus) diseases, the following information is provided concerning this position.

STAFF AND CHARGE NURSES:

Licensed Nurse (i.e. Charge Nurses, Staff Nurses, Clinic Manager, Supervisor, Director of Nurses) who are assigned to the Health Center are placed in Category I due to their direct contact with bodily fluids in accordance with their assigned duties as follows:

Catharizing residents, obtaining and handling laboratory specimens of urine, feces, sputum drainage, blood, etc.

Giving injections with the potential for accidental needle sticks.

Starting intravenous infusion lines and maintaining I.V. lines.

Performing various wound care type treatments.

Handling of urine, feces, vomitus, mucus, and drainage from wounds, while performing hygiene care for the residents.

Emptying and cleaning urinals, bedpans, emesis basins, drainage receptacles.

Inserting, changing, and irrigating catheters, nasal gastric tubes, and gastrostomy tubes, irrigating intravenous tubing, INT type needles.

ELECTRONIC MEDICAL RECORDS & DOCUMENTATION

USE OF COMPUTER FOR DOCUMENTATION OF MEDICAL RECORDS:  To define the relationship between computerized medical records and printed medical records.

Computerized medical records are maintained on the Electronic Chart System (ECS) for each resident. These records are updated to reflect the status of the resident. Staff have access to information contained within the system, using unique assigned access codes. Information contained on ECS is printed and placed on individual resident records on a regular basis. There are times when information is located on ECS but has not yet been printed. Staff have access to this information for review and may print information at intervals other than as needed. Information contained in ECS is considered part of the resident record and is maintained in a confidential manner.

ELECTRONIC SIGNATURES:

Each employee utilizing the computer system will be issued a unique entry to the system. This code is to be always kept confidential. The code becomes the equivalent of a written signature. Under no circumstances is computer entry to be done under another person's code. Disciplinary action will result if violations occur.

A list of computer codes is maintained in the system's databases. Access to this list is limited to the System Supervisor and employees holding the following positions: Administrator and Director of Nursing. If a User feels that their code confidentiality has been compromised, they may request that the System Supervisor assign a new code.

Printouts and/or information viewed on the computer screen contain the date    and time of the entry and the initials of the user who made the entry. These initials are comprised of a set of three letters, which are unique to the User who made the entry. The date, time, and initials will appear at the beginning of documentation and are associated with all subsequent entries, until either the date, time or initials change, at which point the new information would appear.

To ensure accuracy of documentation, the user is to review information on the screen prior to saving the information. If subsequent errors are noted, the Edit process is to be used to note errors. This process will save the original record, as well as the correction, indicating the date, time, and initials of the original entry, as well as the edited copy.

The person dictating, using the Edit/Add process, to indicate agreement, or to note any changes at the end of the entries will verify dictated information. The date, time and initials of the person reviewing the information will be noted electronically.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk hear, and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, and crouch.  Employee must have excellent balance and be able to climb a ladder and walk around a roof. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and be able to work at heights.  Specific vision abilities required by the job include close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus as well as work on a computer for extended periods of time.  The employee must be able to communicate verbally with other on the phone or in person.
