Job Function
The R&D Product Development Engineer will be responsible for development projects for new drilling fluids products, product line expertise, and advanced technical customer support.
The position is based at our Houston, TX (Wallisville Road) site and reports into the Performance Materials R&D Manager.
Responsibilities
- Work both independently and in collaboration with other engineers, sales representatives, and customers to develop new products for the oil/gas drilling industry.
- Contribute to feed the new product development pipeline by identifying unmet market needs and opportunities.
- Supervise and plan laboratory work and prescribe instruction for technicians. Develop new procedures to support development and scale-up of energy products, as well as raw materials qualification, production support and customer support related projects.
- Provide written and verbal reports and project status updates to internal and external customers.
- Support process engineering initiatives, improving yield and profitability of production processes, working with the operations team and manufacturing engineers.
- Document project work and manage project deadlines. Create reports to summarize current progress, results, and next steps.
- Be proficient in operation of appropriate R&D and manufacturing equipment and test instruments.
- Identify and plan projects for potential new development opportunities, as required by customers and market demands.
- Familiarize yourself with Vibrantz ISO procedures and practice them.
- Maintain documentation to organize, analyze, and record your work in both electronic and paper format.
- Practice good housekeeping, organization, and safety in the laboratories. Identify and use safety labels on product containers.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Experience
- A bachelor’s degree in science or engineering discipline.
- 5 years’ experience in drilling fluids and/or drilling fluid additives and strong working knowledge of how drilling fluids are used in different formations.
- Prior lab and product development experience.
- Experience using personal protective equipment; knowledge of common laboratory safety practices.
- Experience with project management software or systems and generating reports, to plan experiments and record, analyze, and summarize results.
Preferred Experience
- 8 years of R&D experience in drilling fluids, cementing and production chemicals .
- Lab management experience, including writing procedures, and implementing and developing best safety practices.
- Experience working closely with a manufacturing plant
- Established relationships within the drilling fluids industry and experience conduct technical presentations to customers or partners
