ABOUT THE POSITION

Environmental Engineer / Geologist - Site Investigation & Remediation (SI&R)

Locations: New York City, NY | Boston, Massachusetts | Montpelier, VT | South Portland, Maine

At VHB, we bring together diverse perspectives and technical expertise to solve complex environmental challenges and make a meaningful difference in our communities. We're seeking an Environmental Engineer, Geologist, or Hydrogeologist with 3 years of experience to join our growing National Site Investigation & Remediation (SI&R) practice. You'll collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, build your technical skills through hands-on project work, and learn from experienced professionals in a supportive, team-oriented environment.

This hybrid role can be based out of a number of our New England/Northeast offices in Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, or our New York City office.

Our SI&R team partners with public and private sector clients to address properties impacted by hazardous substances and petroleum releases. Our work spans the full project lifecycle-from site identification and characterization through risk assessment, remedial design and implementation, and regulatory closure. As part of our national practice, you'll contribute to diverse projects across multiple jurisdictions throughout the United States.

Responsibilities

Support project managers in evaluating environmental conditions and addressing clients' site investigation and remediation needs.
  • Plan and conduct site investigation and remediation field activities, including soil, groundwater, and soil vapor sampling, drilling oversight, and monitoring well installation, with guidance from senior staff.
  • Coordinate and participate in assigned field tasks with subcontractors, and project logistics while following project-specific health and safety requirements.
  • Compile, evaluate, and interpret environmental data to support conceptual site models and project recommendations.
  • Use data management and visualization tools to organize findings and communicate results.
  • Contribute to Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, remedial investigations, feasibility studies, remedial planning, and long-term monitoring programs.
  • Prepare technical reports, correspondence, field documentation, and memoranda for review by senior staff.
  • Track assigned tasks against project schedules and budgets, communicate progress, and identify issues requiring project manager input.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and provide hands-on support to less-experienced team members during field activities, as appropriate.

Skills and Attributes

  • Ability to balance office-based technical work with field assignments and travel to project sites.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and complete assigned tasks independently with appropriate guidance.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
  • Working knowledge of site assessment and characterization methods, environmental data analysis, and remediation approaches.
  • Familiarity with applicable state and federal environmental regulatory frameworks, including CERCLA, and an interest in expanding that knowledge.
  • Ability to recognize technical or field challenges and seek timely input from senior staff.
  • Experience supporting projects in New England or New York preferred; exposure to multiple regulatory jurisdictions is a plus.
  • PFAS-related project experience or knowledge preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Geology, or a related field required; Master's degree in a related field preferred.
  • 3 years of professional experience in environmental site investigation, characterization, and/or remediation required.
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training and current annual refresher training required.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Geology (FG) registration or Professional Engineer (PE)/Geologist (PG) licensure preferred

The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $75,000 to $110,000 if located in New York or Massachusetts and $70,000 to $95,000 if located in Vermont or Maine. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law.
