- Diagnosing and treating localized ailments and diseases
- Conducting and supervising patient care
- Implementing disease prevention and health programs
- Commanding medical units and performing staff functions in health support
- Conducting medical research on diseases of military importance
- Participating in medical education and training
- Doctor of medicine or osteopathy degree from an accredited U.S. institution; foreign graduates require certification
- Current medical license in the U.S., D.C., or Puerto Rico
- Eligibility for board certification and completion of at least one year of graduate medical internship
- U.S. citizenship and age between 21-42 (waivers possible)
