The Controller is a key member of the leadership team, responsible for stewarding the financial health and sustainability of the Veterans Health Foundation. The Controller oversees all accounting functions, budgeting, payroll, financial planning and analysis, grant and contract compliance, insurance, and risk management. This individual ensures that financial operations align with the organization's mission-driven goals while maintaining compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements.Financial Management & Strategy• Develop and oversee budgeting in collaboration with the CEO and other department/program managers.• Manage banking relationships, cash management, and investments. Serves as authorized signatory for organization.• Prepare and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting to the CEO, Finance & Audit Committee, and Board of Directors to support decision-making and strategic planning.• Monitor budget performance, investments and cash flow, identifying risks and opportunities.• Lead financial risk management and compliance initiatives• Support financial planning for strategic initiatives and long-term sustainability.• Monitor industry trends and adopt innovative technologies to strengthen efficiency, transparency and impact.• Represent VHF in philanthropic networks and professional associations at the regional, state and national level.Accounting & Compliance• General ledger maintenance, monthly closings, reconciliations, and preparation of financial statements.• Prepare and record journal entries, adjustments and reconciliations to ensure accuracy and compliance with accounting standards.• Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.• Coordinate and lead the annual audit process and liaise with external accountants, auditors, and the finance committee of the Board of Directors.• Maintain internal controls and financial policies to safeguard assets.• Development and documentation of accounting policies and procedures.Grants & Contracts• Work closely with program staff to support budgeting for grant proposals.• Track restricted funds and ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to funding sources and stakeholders.Supervisory Role- The Controller will supervise the Program Support Specialist• Conduct annual performance evaluations and provide ongoing meaningful feedback.• Set goals and evaluate progress on a regular basis.• Identify professional development opportunities.• Address performance problems in a timely and effective manner.• Communicate organizational news and information on a regular basis.Qualifications• Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in accounting or finance• 5 years’ experience in private foundation/non-profit setting• Proficiency with accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks) and Microsoft Excel• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.• Proven leadership and management skills.• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present financial data clearly to diverse stakeholders• Ability to adapt to a continually evolving environment, prioritize competing priorities and thrive in an autonomous and deadline-oriented workplace, while also working collaboratively when needed.• Commitment to continuous learning, adaptability, and openness to innovation.BenefitsTime Off: VHF recognizes all 11 federal holidays paid holidays and offers a generous PTO policyComprehensive Health Plans: Medical plan for employee and family-70% covered by employer.  Dental, and Vision- 100% covered by employeeCompany paid Life insuranceOptional AFLAC coverage for short and long term disability.Generous HRA Contribution: 100% deductible covered by employer.401(k) Matching: Contribution matching up to 5% to help invest in your future.Pre-tax Benefits: Access to Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) and Dependent Care BenefitsTraining and Development Opportunities Company DescriptionVHF is a mission driven organization that values a team-oriented culture and actively encourages internal career advancement.
