What are the responsibilities and job description for the Medical Instrument Technician (Anesthesia) position at Veterans Health Administration?
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after complete review of the EDRP application.

Experience: At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled.
*In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Assignment: This represents the full performance level. The anesthesia technician at this level assists anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists in difficult anesthetic procedures under minimal supervision. The technician will connect and operate invasive hemodynamic monitoring equipment (e.g., arterial pressure monitors), anesthesia machines, ventilators, intubation bronchoscopes, and ultrasonic scanning devices. Technicians prepare and administer medications as directed by the attending physician. They mentor and train lower graded technicians, nurses, medical students, and anesthesia residents on anesthesia technology procedures and assist the supervisor/manager with quality control and performance improvement activities. The technician will exercise a high degree of independent judgment in anesthesia technology duties.
Preferred Experience: Anesthesia Technician Certification through the American Society of Anesthesia Technologists and Technicians (ASATT) is highly desirable.

Physical Requirements: This work requires moderate and heavy lifting (15 lbs and over), pushing (1-2 hours), reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking and standing (1-4 hours), repeated bending (2-3 hours), near vision correctable, ability to see computer screen, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid may be permitted), mental and emotional stability. - Education: There are no specific educational requirements for this occupation.
- Licensure or Certification: Not required for this occupation; however, it is strongly desirable at GS-6 or above as evidence of possession of the essential knowledge, skills, and abilities. For all specialties identified in this standard, Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certifications are desirable. Training which does not result in official certification does not meet this definition.
- English Language Proficiency: Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.

- Skill and ability to maintain sterility during procedures.
