CVOA also operates a 501(c)(3) foundation through which it advances its philanthropic mission, including support, advocacy, and programming for combat veterans and their families across the country.

The National Command Council (NCC) serves as the governing and strategic leadership body of CVOA. Its members are entrusted with guiding the organization's legislative agenda, federal engagement, capital planning, and long-term structural growth nationwide.

The Opportunity

CVOA is seeking a mission-aligned combat veteran with demonstrated experience in fundraising, philanthropic strategy, and nonprofit capital development to join the National Command Council. This appointment represents a unique opportunity to shape the financial future of an organization serving America's combat veterans at the national level.

The selected Council Member will serve as a strategic advisor and advocate for CVOA's development function, working alongside fellow Council Members to advance the organization's fundraising capacity, donor relationships, and long-term financial sustainability.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Assist in identifying, qualifying, and stewarding major donor relationships and institutional funding sources.

  • Provide guidance on capital campaign design, grant strategy, and planned giving programs.

  • Help establish fundraising benchmarks, reporting frameworks, and accountability structures.

  • Leverage personal and professional networks to expand CVOA's donor base and funding pipeline.

Governance and Strategic Leadership

  • Participate in National Command Council meetings and contribute to high-level organizational decision-making.

  • Advise on veteran legislation, federal engagement strategies, and policy priorities aligned with CVOA's mission.

  • Support long-term capital planning and financial sustainability of both the VSO and Foundation entities.

  • Contribute to the Council's work on structural expansion efforts across the country.

  • Serve as an ambassador for CVOA's mission within your professional and veteran community networks.

  • Demonstrated leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to contribute meaningfully within a collegial volunteer governance structure.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to represent CVOA with credibility and integrity.

  • Documentation of combat eligibility (DD-214 or equivalent) will be required prior to appointment.
