About Vessel

Vessel is building the future of housing. We combine breakthrough design, advanced manufacturing, and first-principles thinking to tackle one of the world’s most pressing challenges: creating sustainable, attainable housing for all. This isn’t just construction—it’s a complete reimagining of how people live.

Backed by Mosaic Ventures and Lennar, the nation’s largest homebuilder, Vessel is rapidly scaling to meet growing demand. We care deeply about every detail—from beauty and durability to efficiency and accessibility—because we believe everyone deserves a thoughtfully made home.

The Opportunity

Vessel is growing rapidly, with scores of projects in planning, and we’re looking for an exceptional Software Engineer to join the team. You will join a small team responsible for the software systems that power Vessel's buildings. This is a hands-on, generalist role with meaningful exposure across applications, backend systems, connected devices, and cloud infrastructure. You will not be limited to a single layer of the stack. In one week, you may troubleshoot a device issue in the field, build a new product feature, and deploy a backend service. This role includes travel to job sites for testing and debugging building systems, plus occasional trips to our headquarters in New York City. Travel is expected to be about one week per month or less.

What You'll Do

  • Help build and maintain mobile and web applications used by residents, operators, and internal teams
  • Work on backend services, APIs, serverless functions, and databases to support core product functionality
  • Contribute to IoT and building-system integrations, including HVAC, access control, and sensor data
  • Support cloud infrastructure, deployments, and internal tooling to ensure reliable system performance
  • Help develop practical AI-enabled workflows and automations to improve engineering and business operations
  • Work within our stack (AWS, Home Assistant, TypeScript, Node.js, Ionic), with the expectation to learn and ramp quickly on unfamiliar tools

Who You Are

  • Currently located in or able to commute to Birmingham, AL
  • BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • Comfort with TypeScript or JavaScript and at least one frontend framework
  • Willingness to work across the stack and learn unfamiliar systems quickly
  • Interest in hardware, IoT, or building systems
  • Comfort working directly with users, residents, and property managers when needed
  • Strong curiosity, good judgment, and the ability to solve practical problems
  • Regular use of AI tools in your development workflow for coding, debugging, research, or automation
  • We are not looking for LeetCode performance, a perfectly polished resume, or prior experience with our exact stack; we care more about how you think and what you have made

Why Vessel

  • Opportunity to shape and scale a modern multifamily development company
  • Competitive compensation with performance bonus and equity options
  • 401k & Health Plans (Medical, Dental, and Vision), including HSA/FSA options
  • Life, AD&D, and Disability Insurance, plus Critical Illness and Accident Insurance
