General Description

Vernadero Group Inc. is a Veteran-Owned Small Business founded in 1999 to provide infrastructure and environmental program support to Federal agency projects and activities throughout the United States and its territories. Vernadero is seeking Biological Monitors to provide biological surveys and environmental compliance monitoring support for construction projects in southern Arizona. The Biological Monitor will conduct surveys in advance of construction activities. The Biological Monitor will be at the construction site daily prior to the commencement of construction activities (e.g., excavation, backfill, demolition, hauling, pile driving), and stay on site monitoring the construction activities until the activities have ended each day. Construction activities could extend to 10 hours daily and five to seven days per week based on construction schedules. The Biological Monitor will have the primary responsibilities for ensuring conservation measures are implemented at construction sites. A work truck will be made available to the Biologist Monitor for use during monitoring of construction activities.

Specific Responsibilities

  • Conduct preconstruction focused surveys prior to the start of construction activities.
  • Provide environmental briefings to construction personnel on a daily or weekly basis.
  • Monitor all construction activities to ensure compliance with the project’s environmental requirements.
  • Assist in relocation of sensitive wildlife species as necessary.
  • Record observations of wildlife and plant species observed.
  • Report findings to Project Managers on a daily basis.
  • Collect GPS points, polygons and tracklogs.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Ecology, Natural Resources, Environmental Studies, or related field.
  • A minimum of two years’ experience conducting biological surveys and/or construction monitoring.
  • Ability to monitor the environmental compliance requirements at a construction site, ensure proper implementation of avoidance and mitigation measures, and report incidents of noncompliance.
  • Ability to detect the presence of sensitive animal species through observation and sign.
  • Ability to perform intensive field surveys and work long hours in the field.
  • Ability to work in remote locations and with limited supervision.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
  • Ability to hike across difficult terrain during periods of inclement weather.
  • Possess a smartphone and/or tablet and be capable of completing digital datasheets and using Collector for ArcGIS.
  • Ability to pass a background check and obtain government security clearance.
  • U.S. citizenship.
  • A valid U.S. driver’s license.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $28.00 - $30.00 per hour

Expected hours: 50 – 70 per week
