Responsibilities of the Deputy Sheriff include, but are not limited to the following:

  1. Performing the statutory obligations established for Law Enforcement Officers.

  2. Comply with rules and regulations established by the Sheriff.

  3. Maintain a working knowledge of local, state, and federal statutes.

  4. Aid the prosecutor in preparation of cases and when required present evidence to the court.

  5. Take appropriate action in all cases where it is in the interest of public welfare and safety.

  6. Be on alert for potentially hazardous situations or problem areas and report same to the proper individual or agency.

  7. Render assistance to distressed citizens and provide guidance and direction when requested.

  8. Patrol an assigned area to enforce laws; be alert for infraction of laws and ordinances and maintain civil order and prevent the commission of crimes.

  9. Investigate complaints, perform related tasks, and prepare reports of findings.

  10. Respond to radio messages and telephoned instructions.

  11. Investigate accidents and care for the injured.

  12. Investigate and process abandoned vehicles.

  13. Assist in carrying out court orders, criminal, and civil process as directed.

  14. Guard, transport, and care for persons in custody of the Sheriff.

  15. Aid in the orderly flow of traffic.

  16. Maintain physical appearance that will reflect favorably on the Vermilion County Sheriff's Department.

  17. Perform duties required by specific assignment.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR APPOINTMENT:

An applicant for appointment as Deputy in the Sheriff's Department shall:

  1. Have been a resident of the State of Illinois for a period of one (1) year prior to application.

  2. The application forms and information required of each applicant shall be as established from time to tome by the Vermilion County Merit Commission.

  3. Any applicant certified and appointed to the Sheriff's Department must become a resident of Vermilion County within ninety (90) days after appointment.

  4. Physical requirements: There is sufficient documentation to prove the correlation between height, weight and strength and the individual's ability to successfully perform the duties of a Deputy Sheriff. Therefore, weight must be proportionate to height and physical health as determined by the examining physician, and strength requirements will be determined by the applicant's ability to pass the job-related physical agility examination.

  5. Age requirements: Applicants must be at least twenty (20) ears of age and not have passed their 35th birthday to take the original examination. Because deputy sheriffs under twenty-one (21) are forbidden by law to make arrests or carry weapons, such applicants cannot be appointed a Deputy Sheriff until reaching age twenty-one (21).
