VMG is seeking a Vocational Technical Instructor for a temporary 60-day assignment supporting the Joint Base Charleston Brig. Successful performance during the initial assignment may result in an opportunity for conversion to a permanent full-time position, based on contract needs and individual performance.
The Vocational Technical Instructor will provide classroom and hands-on vocational instruction in forklift operations, heavy equipment, construction site safety, and basic tool operations for incarcerated individuals participating in the Brig's vocational training program. This position plays a critical role in promoting workforce readiness, technical skill development, and successful rehabilitation while maintaining a safe, secure, and structured learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver classroom and hands-on vocational instruction in forklift operations, heavy equipment, construction site safety, and basic tool operations.
- Develop, implement, and maintain lesson plans that incorporate vocational education, technical skills training, and life skills development.
- Plan and schedule instructional activities for both individual and group learning environments.
- Demonstrate equipment operation and provide practical instruction to ensure participant understanding and competency.
- Maintain accurate training records, attendance documentation, and participant progress reports.
- Monitor classroom activities and ensure appropriate use of instructional materials, equipment, and workstations.
- Manage vocational training resources, including classroom materials and the prisoner library.
- Coordinate monthly classroom schedules with the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR) to avoid conflicts with Brig operations.
- Monitor participant work assignments, classroom performance, and daily progress while maintaining accountability at all times.
- Operate, maintain, and perform minor repairs on forklift equipment used during instruction.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and professional learning environment in accordance with Brig policies, procedures, and security requirements.
- Collaborate with government personnel and facility staff to ensure the successful delivery of the vocational training program.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Current Sponsor Representative/Craft Instructor Certification through the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER), or the ability to obtain certification within 60 days of employment.
- Experience providing vocational, technical, or workforce development instruction.
- Experience developing lesson plans and maintaining training documentation.
- Strong communication, instructional, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a structured correctional environment.
- Ability to successfully pass a background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications
- Heavy Equipment Operator experience. Forklift experience.
- Experience teaching vocational or technical education programs.
- Experience working in a correctional or detention facility.
- Military experience.
- Experience instructing adult learners in classroom and hands-on training environments.
Work Environment
- Temporary full-time assignment for an initial 60-day period, with the potential for conversion to a permanent full-time position based on performance and contract requirements.
- Position is located at Joint Base Charleston Brig, Charleston, South Carolina.
- Work is performed in a secure correctional facility and classroom environment.
- Position requires daily interaction with incarcerated individuals while adhering to all facility security and safety protocols.
