Consumer Debt Defense Attorney -  Contract, Remote in Iowa

Veritas Legal Plan, Inc.
Location: Remote in Iowa
Employment type: Part-time, Contract

Veritas Legal Plan is seeking an experienced Consumer Debt Defense Attorney to serve as a participating attorney for eligible Iowa plan members. This is a remote, part-time independent-contractor opportunity for an attorney who wants meaningful consumer debt-defense work without leaving their existing practice. Debt defense often involves consumers facing collection lawsuits from credit-card issuers, lenders, debt buyers, and other creditors. Many members need practical guidance, timely representation, and a clear understanding of their options.

Every debt-collection lawsuit presents different facts, documentation, procedural issues, settlement opportunities, and client objectives. As a participating attorney, you will exercise independent professional judgment in every accepted matter. You will determine the appropriate legal strategy, communicate directly with the members and the debt settlement affiliate, and provide services consistent with the applicable plan benefits, court rules, and rules of professional conduct. You can continue operating your own law practice while accepting Veritas matters that fit your experience, geographic coverage, and availability. There is no exclusivity requirement.

WHAT YOU'LL HANDLE

You will provide covered consumer debt-defense services for eligible Veritas members in Iowa, which may include matters involving credit cards, consumer loans, debt buyers, and other consumer debt claims.

Case Strategy & Ownership

  • Review referred matters and determine whether to accept representation, subject to conflicts and professional obligations.
  • Evaluate each matter and develop a case-specific defense or resolution strategy.
  • Manage accepted matters from initial review through resolution, where appropriate.
  • Identify procedural, evidentiary, standing, documentation, and other potential defenses.
  • Maintain organized case records and ensure accepted matters continue moving forward.
  • Balance legal strategy with the member's goals, financial circumstances, risks, and practical realities.

Pleadings, Discovery & Motions

  • Prepare, review, sign, and file appropriate pleadings, including notices of appearance and answers.
  • Draft and respond to written discovery when covered and appropriate.
  • Analyze documents produced by plaintiffs and identify evidentiary or substantive weaknesses.
  • Determine and perform appropriate covered services, which may include motions, discovery, settlement documentation, and related work.
  • Prepare for hearings or other proceedings when the attorney accepts a matter requiring an appearance.

Negotiation & Resolution

  • Evaluate settlement opportunities throughout the matter.
  • Negotiate with creditors, debt buyers, opposing counsel, and other relevant parties.
  • Provide members with clear recommendations regarding litigation risk, settlement options, and next steps.
  • Resolve matters through dismissal, settlement, or other appropriate outcomes consistent with the covered services and professional obligations.

Client Communication & Trust

  • Communicate clearly and promptly with members regarding their accepted matters.
  • Explain legal options and strategy in understandable terms.
  • Set realistic expectations while providing responsive, respectful service.
  • Maintain client confidentiality and comply with all applicable professional-conduct rules.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Active, unrestricted license in good standing with the Iowa Bar.
  • Professional liability insurance with minimum limits of $100,000 per claim and $300,000 aggregate.
  • Strong written communication, negotiation, organization, and client-service skills.
  • Ability to independently evaluate consumer debt-defense matters and develop practical strategies.
  • Ability to manage accepted matters ethically, independently, and in compliance with applicable rules of professional conduct.
  • Ability to appear in court in Iowa when an accepted matter requires an in-person or remote appearance.

Preferred (We offer Debt Settlement certification from the IAPDA, if desired)

  • Experience in civil litigation, consumer debt defense, collections, bankruptcy, consumer law, or a related practice area.
  • Familiarity with the Iowa Rules of Civil Procedure and consumer debt-collection litigation.
  • Experience drafting answers, notices of appearance, discovery responses, motions, and settlement documentation.
  • Experience negotiating with creditors, debt buyers, collection firms, or opposing counsel.

COMPENSATION

This is a 1099 independent-contractor opportunity. Veritas pays a fixed fee for each completed covered matter, based on the specific services performed and supporting documentation received. Qualified applicants will be presented with the full fee schedule upon submitting application.
