DIRECTIONAL DRILL LOCATOR – FIBER OPTIC CABLE SYSTEM
The Directional Drill Locator is responsible for accurately locating and guiding horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations for telecommunications construction projects. This role works closely with the drill operator to ensure safe, precise, and efficient bore paths while protecting existing utilities and maintaining compliance with project specifications and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Locate and guide the drill head during HDD operations using locating equipment
Communicate real-time depth, pitch, and direction to the drill operator
Ensure bore path follows approved design and avoids existing utilities
Verify utility locates and markings prior to drilling
Monitor bore profile to meet clearance and depth requirements
Identify and report potential conflicts or hazards
Assist with potholing and verifying utility locations
Maintain accurate bore logs and documentation
Ensure compliance with safety procedures and OSHA standards
Support drill crew with setup, cleanup, and general job site duties
Assist with product installation as needed (conduit, fiber, etc.)
Participate in daily safety meetings and job briefings
Required Qualifications
Prior experience as an HDD Locator in telecom, utility, or underground construction
Strong knowledge of HDD locating systems (e.g., DigiTrak, Subsite, Falcon)
Ability to read and interpret bore profiles, prints, and utility maps
Understanding of underground utility locating and damage prevention
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Ability to work in outdoor environments and varying weather conditions
Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
Preferred Qualifications
Experience in telecom fiber and conduit installation
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
Knowledge of local utility regulations and permitting
CDL (Class A or B)
Physical Requirements
Ability to lift up to 75–100 lbs as required
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and work on uneven terrain
Ability to work long hours and travel to job sites
