Vera House, Inc. is a human service agency that provides unconditional care for individuals and families through comprehensive domestic and sexual violence prevention and intervention services. POSITION SUMMARY:

As an intern at Vera House, Inc., your support and care can make all the difference to a victim of domestic violence, sexual assault or elder abuse. This unpaid opportunity can help interested candidates gain skills and experience through direct and indirect services. Experience an internship based on your field or area of interest, with flexible hours between 8:30am-5pm. Internships have the opportunity for course credit, (must provide form from your academic advisor to receive course credits). All opportunities are based on the capacity and need of the assigned department and are up to the discretion of Vera House. Selected candidates will go through a screening and interview process.

DIRECT AND INDIRECT SERVICE OPPORTUNITIES:

• Advocacy Intern
  1. Engage in client-facing support.
  2. Learn about Systems Advocacy.
  3. Facilitating support groups.
  4. Crisis Support in person and remote.
  5. Specialty focuses available (LGBTQIA , Human Trafficking, etc.).

• Prevention Education Intern
  1. Presentations/Outreach in schools, nightlife and other organizations.
  2. Campus Sexual Assault Advocacy.
  3. Creation of Curriculum.
  4. Tabling Community Events.

• Elder Abuse and Justice Intern
  1. Community Outreach and Prevention Events.
  2. Training and Presentations on Aging and Elder Justice.
  3. Co-Facilitating Elder Support Groups.
  4. Information and Referral Services with Clients.
  5. Opportunities to Learn about Grant-Writing and Stewardship.

• Legal Intern
  1. Experience in court accompaniment.
  2. Experience in criminal justice system, family court and supreme court.
  3. Gender-affirming care (name change, etc.).
  4. Family Court Orders of Protection. 
  5. (There is no attorney on staff, so we are unable to support legal interns seeking pro bono hours.)

• Development Intern
  1. Fundraising.
  2. Social Media Engagement.
  3. Graphic Design.
  4. Special Events Coordination.
  5. Marketing and Communication.
  6. Community Outreach for Donors and Business partnerships.

• Clinical Intern
  1. Providing Trauma focused therapy to individuals, couples, and families ages 2.5 and older.
  2. Facilitating support groups.
  3. Long term and brief crisis support services.
  4. Gender-affirming care.
  5. Specialty focus (LGBTQIA , Substances, Human Trafficking, etc.).

• Alternatives/Steps
  1. Facilitating support groups.
  2. Case management.
  3. Client coordination, and resource referrals. 

INTERN REQUIREMENTS:

• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must be removed from your own personal crisis situation.
• Completion of a satisfactory background check.
• Completion of agency orientation and basic training on domestic violence, sexual assault and elder abuse. 
• Attendance required for specialized training to work directly with clients.
