Job Description

Position Purpose:

Under supervision, performs landscaping and lawn mowing work, operating equipment/tractors, makes repairs, and/or replaces fences of the watershed areas. Operates construction equipment such as backhoes, forklifts, pavers, pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools; Does related work as required. occasionally may assist in installing, maintaining and repairing mains, valves, pumps, hydrants, and other water service equipment.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Operates equipment, drives utility vehicles, performs lawn mowing, landscaping work, maintenance of fence around watershed perimeter.
  • Conduct groundskeeping and landscaping functions including brush cutting, grubbing and trash/debris removal from work areas. Able to manipulate commercial grade lawn mowers and various landscaping tools. Operation of snow ploughing equipment. Chainsaw operation, fence repairs, and when directed collect and deliver system water samples as needed.
  • Performs fence installation and repairs. Repair and replace damaged fence components including posts, rails, panels etc. Install sections of new fences. Measure and mark fence lines, dig holes for posts, set up framework, and install fence panels. Verify that tenses are level, and secure. Tighten barb wires and/or replace if necessary. Repair fabric holes and replace them if necessary. Fix and/or replace top rail sections.
  • Installs, maintains, and repairs water mains, pipes, valves, pumps, hydrants and other equipment. Sees that water taps, and cuts are performed and closed in work areas.
  • Sets drilling machines and taps water mains to the size required by placing needed sleeves and properly setting the valves, disassembles fire hydrants, removes defective parts, installs new parts and reassembles hydrants. Replaces water valves and air compressor and pneumatic drill.
  • Digs trenches to remove defective pipes and to install new pipes, and main; yarns and pours, and caulks joint; loads and unloads pipes and fittings obtains, safeguards, and property uses needed equipment, tools, materials and supplies.
  • Excavates and backfills trenches and culverts, installs, repairs, and replaces water and sewer mains, joins and caulks pipeline, repairs valves and hydrants, drills and installs taps in mains, and performs related street repairs, working from land plats, maps, and other diagrams.
  • Performs similar or less skilled work as assigned.
  • Assists employees of a higher classification as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:

  • High School Diploma/GED is required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Some knowledge of proper procedures used in making complex repairs to water mains, pipes and appurtenances of varied types of tools used in the maintenance and repair of water installations and of the proper use of these tools.
  • Ability to read, write, speak and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
  • Ability to understand, remember and carry out oral and written directions to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.
  • Must participate in emergency stand-by rotation and must respond to the yard within forty-five minutes of notification, excluding Water Treatment Plant.
  • In emergency situations, must be able to remain on the job until all repairs have been made and to operate an air compressor skillfully and other specialized tools and equipment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to operate a 90 Lbs. jackhammer.
  • Ability to lift 50 Lbs.

Pay Rate: $26.53 per hour.
