Lab Supervisor - Wastewater

Position Purpose: 

Oversees RIDOH certified laboratory operations to ensure compliance with laboratory procedures and processes. Oversees the proper collection and analysis of samples, prepares reports and submits data to all regulating agencies/clients that utilize the services of certified analytical Laboratory. In addition, provides subject matter expertise to Operations in water quality and regulatory compliance related issues.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities: 

• Responsible for the proper and efficient operation of the water quality laboratory. Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and company standards with regard to sample collection, analysis, and associated operations.
• Ensures the maintenance of the laboratory's certification status, as a nationally certified laboratory under NELAC (National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Council.)
• Participate in State audits and implement actions including updating of applicable SOPs.
• Responsible for the preparation and submission of the required reports to all applicable regulating agencies. He/she also oversees the timely preparation and dissemination of required reports, both internally (for example, for CCR generation) and externally (for example, lead consumer notices).
• Responsible for analyzing sample data, identifying patterns, and alerting the proper individuals. The incumbent works closely with operations and customer service to interpret data in conjunction with complaints of water discoloration, taste, or odor. He/she assists in the identification of the source of leaks and makes appropriate recommendations and resolves sophisticated customer inquiries and complaints (for example, regarding alleged illnesses.)
• Provides technical data to the Corporate Communications Department in response to customer or media inquiries and provides analytical reports to customer requests for water quality information. The incumbent conducts occasional public tours of the laboratory to further good public relations and private tours to promote the laboratory and its accomplishments.
• Manages and oversees schedules for collecting and analyzing samples for Operations, serving as a troubleshooter for any problems which arise with chemical analysis or laboratory instrumentation.
• Maintains active liaison with outside technical sales representatives and associates to keep abreast of new products and developments. Reviews laboratory procedures and recommends new methods and analytical instruments.
• Provides support to the operations for water quality and regulatory compliance related issues.
• Promote lab expansion by developing plans for bringing treatment in-house (for example, lead, copper and PFAS) and implementing the plans by hiring additional staff, recommending purchase of equipment, facilitating equipment training and obtaining State certifications.

Education/Experience/Background: 

• BS in Chemistry or related field.
• 5 - 7 years of experience in water quality laboratory operations.
• Minimum of 6 credits in microbiology.
• RI academic requirements for directors of certified labs.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: ·           

• Thorough working knowledge of water quality laboratories.
• Fundamental knowledge of US EPA Safe Drinking Water Act and associated regulations.
• Strong analytical skills.
• Strong understanding of state and federal regulations.
• Initiative and strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
• Thorough working knowledge of computer systems, including MS Office & Google products and LIMS.
• Working knowledge of water chemistry.
• Good presentation Skills.
• Must be able to learn new regulations and technology. 

Physical Requirements:

• Walking on uneven terrain; climbing hills and stairs; moderate lifting up to 25 pounds; sit for long periods at a time. 
• Utilize computers for extended time periods.
• Must be able to see clearly, hear warning devices and alarms.
• Must be able to speak to give direction and converse with other officials.
• Must be able to smell for dangerous conditions such as sewer gases and chlorine.
