Lead Technician – Lighting

The Lead Technician is responsible for maintaining the highest standards of technical
operations, managing technical staff, overseeing pre-production, enforcing company
policies, and contributing to company growth. This position reports directly to the
General Manager.
Key Responsibilities
General Leadership & Oversight
- Exercise independent judgment in evaluating company policies, activities, and
operational guidelines.
- Communicate regularly and openly with the General Manager regarding
departmental direction and operational activities.
- Recommend strategic partnerships and implement initiatives as directed by the
General Manager.
- Ensure compliance with venue and company policies among all employees while
maintaining a professional and positive attitude towards management, vendors,
and clients.
- Maintain oversight of the department’s progress throughout the day, ensuring
timely task completion.
- Exhibit professional communication, appearance, organization, and initiative.
- Uphold a constructive mindset and positive demeanor when interacting with
employees, vendors, and clients.
- Arrive 30 minutes before call time to discuss the daily plan with department heads
and remain on-site until all work is completed and all paperwork is submitted.
- Work on-site as required to fulfill job responsibilities.
- Accurately log work hours and reimbursement requests through Deputy.Technical Operations
- Perform on-site stage supervision, department head duties, and crew tasks as
needed, including lighting system operation, load-in and strike assistance, and
other necessary technical functions.
- Supervise and manage technical staff, ensuring a safe and positive work
environment while enforcing company policies and guidelines.
- Make technical decisions that align with clients’ operational and budgetary needs,
troubleshooting issues as they arise.
- Ensure all shows remain within budget, informing the Technical Director/General
Manager of potential overages in advance.
- Communicate with venue management as needed, addressing facility concerns
while maintaining clear boundaries between technical and house responsibilities.
- Develop and maintain expertise in the technical systems of all VPG venues,
including rigging, audio, and flyrail operations.
- Stay proficient in the lighting and video systems at VPG venues.
Pre-Production, Administration & Maintenance
- Initiate communication with lighting and video heads for incoming events and
complete all required departmental advance work.
- Prepare and submit lighting plots in accordance with operational timelines.
- Collaborate with department heads to resolve show-related technical challenges.
- Identify necessary lighting or video rental equipment, obtain vendor quotes,
manage delivered equipment, and ensure proper return without additional costs.
- Thoroughly brief replacement technicians on all technical and show details to
ensure smooth operations.
- Develop and maintain a maintenance plan for all venue lighting equipment and
tools.
- Research and propose new equipment purchases.
- Ensure all technical areas remain organized, tidy, and safe.General Duties
- Be available for work on all scheduled crew call days.
- Attend venue meetings and walk-throughs, take notes, and distribute relevant
information.
- Support non-venue labor calls with on-site crew work as assigned.
- Maintain regular phone availability, including after hours.
- Regularly check and respond to company emails in a timely manner.
