Job Overview
Ventura Dive is hiring a Divemaster to work across three settings: the retail shop, pool training sessions, and deck duty aboard The Raptor, our 46-foot charter vessel running trips to Channel Islands National Park. You’ll supervise certified divers on charters, assist PADI instructors during courses and pool sessions, and cover shop tasks between water time. This is paid, year-round work at a working harbor operation, not seasonal tour-guide work.
Duties
On the boat (The Raptor)
- Conduct dive briefings, headcounts, and safety checks for certified divers on Channel Islands charters
- Supervise divers within PADI Divemaster-conducted-activity limits; assist the captain and crew with deck logistics, line handling, and gear staging
- Deliver the Naturalist’s Briefing on Channel Islands marine life and conservation practices
- Respond to in-water emergencies with First Aid/CPR/O2 provider skills as needed
In the pool and training
- Assist PADI instructors during confined-water and pool sessions for Open Water, Advanced, and specialty courses
- Help candidates with equipment setup, skill practice, and gear troubleshooting under instructor direction
- Support Discover Scuba Diving and Refresher sessions under direct instructor supervision
In the shop
- Handle guest check-in, gear rental, tank fills, and basic equipment maintenance
- Answer customer questions on courses, equipment, and trip logistics with accurate pricing and policy information
- Keep rental and retail inventory organized and ready for daily operations
Qualifications
- Current PADI Divemaster certification (or equivalent agency professional-level rating) in good standing
- Current First Aid, CPR, and O2 provider certification
- California Boater Card (required by state law for motorized vessel operation)
- Comfortable working in cold-water Pacific conditions: kelp, current, and surge
- Prior deck, boat crew, or dive shop experience preferred
- Clear communication skills for briefings and guest interaction; bilingual ability a plus, not a requirement
- Physically able to handle tanks, gear, and small-boat deck work in varying weather
Divemaster training and mentorship into Assistant Instructor and Instructor roles is available in-house for the right candidate.
