Job Summary

Job Summary

Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, support regular staff in providing academic and social instruction and support to individuals or small groups of students with special needs; monitor and report student progress regarding behavior and performance; assist students in developing various self-help skills, including hygiene, eating, social, community, vocational, and leisure/recreational skills. Substitute teachers do not dispense medications; they do not perform specialized physical health care procedures; and they do not drive vehicles to transport students. Substitute teachers are required to learn about and support implementation of school-wide systems of behavior, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and/or Nonviolent Crisis Prevention Intervention (NCPI); however, they do not utilize restraint procedures.

Requirements / Qualifications

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Valid California Special Education Credential to teach students with Extensive Support Needs (Moderate/Severe) disabilities. Appropriate certification for teaching English Language Learners. It is desired that candidates have experience working with children or adolescents with autism and training with Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA).

All application materials must be submitted with a VCOE application as a complete package. A complete application package must include the following:

  • Credential Copy ( (Copy of valid California State Credential Copy ((Please attach a copy of your Extensive Support Needs (Moderate/Severe) Special Education Credential))

Transcripts: Copies of official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended, including undergraduate coursework up to highest level of education must be submitted. All official / copies of transcripts can be submitted by one of the following: 1) Attach to Edjoin application 2) Emailed directly to VCOE from your college / university ** 3) Mailed via U.S. mail to Ventura County Office of Education Attn: Substitutes 5189 Verdugo Way Camarillo, CA 93012. *** **If utilizing the email option, please have transcripts emailed to: pjimenez@vcoe.org, abarrera@vcoe.org, or tswavely@vcoe.org. ***Any hard copy official transcripts you receive directly from your college/university can be provided to the HR department as well. VCOE will examine your transcripts to determine if the college(s) / university (universities) is /are regionally accredited. You must meet the basic skills requirement for substitute teaching which may be done through college coursework, CBEST scores, SAT scores, ACT scores, etc. If you have completed any of these tests, please attach your scores to your EdJoin application.
