Fruit Sorter Laborer - Flex Shift (70275)

Job Summary

The Fruit Sorter Laborer is responsible for the inspection of fruit which is enroute from fruit receiving to the extractors. The grader will separate fruit (lemon, orange or grapefruit) which is split or otherwise substandard for processing and deposit the unacceptable fruit in a separate location. The grader will work with a crew of four to six graders assigned to the same shift.  When not sorting fruit, the sorter will clean fruit receiving/extraction areas.

Primary Responsibilities

• Food Safety is the responsibility of all Ventura Coastal manufacturing employees. All Ventura Coastal manufacturing employees must be aware of CCPs in their area and how to document them appropriately.  All staff must report food safety and quality problems to their immediate supervisor in charge during their shift.
• Discard all decaying, split fruit or foreign objects.
• Separate fruit that is split or otherwise substandard for processing from acceptable citrus fruit.
• Sample fruit hourly by variety into a holding bin for fruit composite testing.
• Clean:  Sizing Table, Sorting Table, Platforms, Stairs, Extractors, Finishers, Brush Washers, Peel Conveyors and all surrounding areas.
• Will perform cleaning duties on mobile stairs and decking between extractors.
• Shovel fruit on ground surfaces.
• Follow all safety rules and practices including the wearing of all personal protective equipment.
• Follow all food safety and personal hygiene practices.
• Demonstrate reliable attendance, consistent punctuality and a positive attitude always.
• Treat all co-workers with respect and professionalism.
• Act professionally towards customers, vendors or other visitors to the plant.
• Perform other duties as assigned and required.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

• High School diploma or GED.
• Ability to work effectively from verbal or written instructions.
• The ability to maintain concentration for a minimum of two (2) hours at time while fruit passes the grading table in heavy volumes.
• Ability to use stairs/ladders on a recurring basis.

Physical Requirements

• The ability to meet flexible and changing priorities and the ability to work under pressure is a must.
• 80% standing in place at the grading table sorting fruit.
• Must be able to perform cleaning duties 20% of the time. 
• Must be able to demonstrate safe lifting skills – bending at the knees to shovel fruit.
• Must be able to use portable stairs (3 steps) to clean the Brush Washer while holding and using a high-pressure hose.
• Must work on uneven/wet surfaces.
• Must be able to walk up/downstairs.
• Must be able to work an 8-to-12-hour shift
• Must be able to stand/walk 8 to 12 hours a shift.
• Must be able to lift to 20lbs.
