Position Summary
Under minimal supervision, the Sr Controls Technician performs preventive maintenance, repair, installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting of HVAC and building automation systems. This position requires strong technical expertise, customer-facing communication skills, and the ability to mentor and support junior technicians. The ideal candidate will provide solutions that improve building performance, resolve service-related issues, and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
System Troubleshooting & Service
- Diagnose and repair complex HVAC and building automation control systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance, commissioning, and system startups.
- Troubleshoot electronic and digital control systems.
- Modify and test system software and control sequences as needed.
- Ensure systems operate efficiently and according to project specifications.
Customer Support & Communication
- Serve as the primary on-site contact for customers.
- Communicate system status, repairs, recommendations, and upgrade opportunities.
- Conduct site assessments and provide retrofit or enhancement recommendations.
- Deliver customer training on control system operation and maintenance.
Technical Leadership
- Mentor and support Controls Technicians and Service Technicians.
- Provide technical guidance and safety leadership.
- Assist with training and certification development for junior technicians.
Project Support
- Assist with system design and configuration.
- Support project documentation including:
- As-built drawings
- Flow diagrams
- Sequence of operations
- Electrical schematics
- Closeout documentation
- Coordinate with project managers, subcontractors, and engineering teams.
- Assist with material selection, ordering, and tracking.
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere to all company and customer safety standards.
- Maintain accurate documentation and reporting.
- Promote and maintain a safe work environment.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years of commercial HVAC controls troubleshooting experience.
- Experience with:
- Building automation systems (BAS)
- Chiller plants
- HVAC controls and mechanical systems
- Vocational school certification, associate degree in a technical field, or equivalent industry experience.
- Demonstrated ability to install and service electronic control systems.
- Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to explain technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Working knowledge of:
- Control theory
- Automatic temperature controls
- HVAC systems
- Building automation systems
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with commissioning and startup activities.
- Ability to read and interpret schematics and technical drawings.
- Experience supporting retrofit and energy management projects.
- Prior mentoring or leadership experience.
