Duties & Responsibilities
The School of Dentistry’s Department of Prosthodontics is seeking applicants for a full-time faculty position. Responsibilities include didactic and clinical teaching in fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontics to dental students and residents; participation in service activities and research.
The Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Dentistry is located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. With a 132-year history, Virginia’s only dental school offers opportunities for selected, qualified individuals to study dentistry and oral health through its Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) program, graduate specialty training programs, and a dental hygiene program. The VCU School of Dentistry is one of a small number of dental schools in the country affiliated with an academic medical center, the only dental school in the Commonwealth, and one of the oldest dental schools in the United States, founded in 1893. It is one of six health sciences academic programs on the Medical College of Virginia (MCV) Campus of VCU.
Teaching
Position Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include clinical and didactic teaching of pre-doctoral students and residents, in fixed, removable, and implant prosthodontics, as well as mentoring undergraduate dental students and residents in preparation for private practice, service, and scholarship. Leadership as a course director at the pre-doctoral level is also required. All faculty members are expected to teach in an integrated curriculum system. Teaching across traditional departmental lines and in multidisciplinary teams is required. Faculty members are expected to foster transformative learning that is informed by interdisciplinary and translational research, scholarship, and creative expression.
Clinical
Faculty will supervise care in predoctoral and graduate clinics, working collaboratively with other faculty and staff to promote best practices and improve clinic productivity. Participation in the Faculty Private Practice is optional, but requires a demonstrated ability to build a practice.
Research
Faculty members will participate in research and will work collaboratively with dental research programs and investigators.
Service
Faculty members will be expected to serve the Department of Prosthodontics in the School of Dentistry, and committees and task forces as requested. In addition, participation in dentistry-related community service activities is strongly encouraged.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
- DDS or DMD from an ADA-accredited dental school
- Certificate or advanced degree in Prosthodontics from an ADA-accredited program
- Eligible for a dental license in Virginia
- Ability to teach and mentor pre-doctoral dental students and residents in the practice of clinical dentistry
- Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism, and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to and participate in a humanistic environment of learning, with the ability to adapt to change and embrace modern technology
- For tenure-eligible positions at the Assistant Professor rank, an established research agenda and a clear potential for external funding, as well as potential for scholarship or creative expression to complement and expand existing expertise in the department
- For tenure eligible positions at the Associate or Professor rank, a well-developed scholarly/research portfolio with evidence of multi-disciplinary applications and external funding appropriate to complement and expand existing expertise in the department
- Experience teaching pre-doctoral students and residents in all aspects of Prosthodontics
- Board certification in Prosthodontics
