The Department of Neurosurgery is in search of a Lab Technician to support the laboratory of Dr. Inan Olmez. The lab technician is expected to support the laboratory by performing experiments, preparing and analyzing samples, preparing materials, and maintaining lab equipment and supplies as well as documenting experimental results, ensuring safety protocols are followed, assisting with research reports and presentations, ordering lab supplies, and maintaining inventory.
Core responsibilities
• Experimentation: Set up, conduct, and support scientific experiments; interacting with students and other laboratory staff.
• Sample analysis: Collect, prepare, and analyze various biological, or chemical samples
• Data management: Record, analyze, and interpret data, and prepare detailed reports and presentations.
• Equipment maintenance: Set up, calibrate, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment to ensure it is in working order.
• Inventory and supplies: Manage and order laboratory supplies and resources.
• Safety and compliance: Follow and enforce safety guidelines and regulatory protocols to maintain a clean and safe work environment.
• Collaboration: Provide technical support to scientists and collaborate with team members on research projects.
Minimum Hiring Standards:
• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Exceptional attention to detail and a high degree of precision in all tasks.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot effectively.
• Excellent organizational and time management abilities to manage multiple responsibilities efficiently.
• Proficiency in the use of laboratory equipment and techniques relevant to the field.
• Solid understanding of scientific principles and methodologies.
• Familiarity with safety regulations, laboratory protocols, and data analysis software.
• Demonstrated ability to work in and foster an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from all backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s Degree Biology or Neuro Science
• 2 years’ relevant work experience
• Experience with tissue culturing and animal (mouse) handling
