What are the responsibilities and job description for the Unit Secretary - Medical Respiratory ICU - Nights position at VCU Health System?
The Medical Respiratory Intensive Care Unit is a 28 bed unit specializing in the care of patients with multisystem organ failure and complex pulmonary needs. Our patients include various respiratory disorders and failures, such as COPD, ARDS, status asthmaticus, and pneumonia. The latest advances in care delivery is given to our patients with sepsis, GI bleeds, DKA, oncological, acute kidney and liver dysfunction and acid-base and metabolic imbalances. Through true collaborations with the interprofessional team, the MRICU nurses translate EBP, Quality Improvement and Research into our clinical bedside practice, leading the way to advancing safe and quality care to all patients!

The Unit Secretary performs a variety of clerical tasks involved in preparing, maintaining and processing patient and unit activities, data and records. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: N/A Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: N/A Experience REQUIRED: N/A Experience PREFERRED: Previous experience setting up and maintaining office system (organizational skills) Previous experience with medical insurance, MIS, and medical terminology Previous experience in a health care setting Previous experience with Microsoft Office software Previous experience with use of EMR Education/training REQUIRED: High School Diploma or GED Education/training PREFERRED: Completion of a Medical Terminology course Independent action(s) required: Able to perform daily activities with minimal supervision. Self directed in the accomplishment of routine activities. Issues that involve violation of VCUHS policy or procedure that involve conflicts of a sensitive nature, or that would be considered unusual in nature are to be brought to the attention of the Nurse Manager (or designee) promptly as would be warranted by the immediacy of the issue. Job duties may include the handling, transportation, access to and/or contact with medications and related supplies. Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): N/A Additional position requirements: Unit Secretaries work all three shifts, weekends and holidays. Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with specific Nurse Manager. Schedules including requirements of shift rotations and hours of work may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing requirements or the best interest of the work unit. Age Specific groups served: N/A Physical Requirements (includes use of assistance devices as appropriate): Physical - Lifting up to 50 lbs. Activities: Prolonged standing, Prolonged sitting, Frequent bending, Walking (distance), Repetitive motion Mental/Sensory: Strong recall, Reasoning, Problem solving, Hearing, Speak clearly, Write legibly, Reading, Logical thinking Emotional: Able to handle multiple priorities, Frequent and intense customer interactions, Noisy environment, Able to adapt to frequent change Nights

- 28-bed adult ICU, caring for complex medical and pulmonary patients, including post-codes, sepsis, GI bleeds, DKA, renal and liver failure, and those requiring various bedside procedures and advanced pulmonary and invasive interventions
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:1 and 1:2, with charge nurse, unlicensed assistive personnel and unit secretary support 24/7
