The Medical Tech Trainer is responsible for designing, implementing, and overseeing educational programs for laboratory personnel, students, and residents. The Med Tech Trainer is responsible for ensuring competency of the lab staff and maintaining quality in the pre-analytical phase of testing, including orientation, training, and continuous development. The Medical Tech Trainer oversees laboratory activities, including student practicums and clinical rotations. The Medical Tech Trainer serves as a liaison between the Medical Laboratory Science and the Medical Lab Technician affiliated college programs and the laboratory. The Med Tech Trainer prepares and deliver instructions on various laboratory topics, including laboratory methods, safety protocols, quality control, and relevant testing theories. Med Tech Trainer serves of the Pathology Safety Committee and is responsible for educating the lab staff on safety updates and changes. Med Tech Trainer is responsible for maintaining, coordinating, educating laboratory regulatory requirements (CAP, TJC, AABB, FDA). Med Tech Trainer will be responsible for clinical testing and results reporting in all areas where training and verification of competency are attained.

Essential Job Statements

  • Train New Employees: plans, develops, and conducts training including onboarding process, orientation, coordinate scheduling and provision of bench training, ensures training checklists are completed, and new hire competency is completed
  • Coordinates and assigns initial, 6-month and annual competency testing for team members
  • Collaborates with supervisors and manager to create technical competencies, edits, moderates, and evaluates technical competencies. Creates reeducation and/or retraining plans for team members with unsuccessful competencies
  • Serves as the primary liaison between affiliated educational institutions programs and the laboratory to include assisting in organizing of masters student projects
  • Supports student learning including setting expectations, overseeing student safety, administering practical exams, arranging remedial learning time if necessary, completing documentation required by program, providing input to the program leadership regarding student progress, attends meetings with program to provide input on education materials
  • Coordination and assigning of lab jobs to team members
  • Assist with training and coordination of Pathology Residents
  • Coordinate and assures bi-annual instrument crosscheck/correlation is completed
  • Serves as a laboratory Safety Representative to include oversite of chemical inventory, safety walk-throughs. Ensures adherence to laboratory standards, procedures, and safety protocols
  • Write, update, and assist with maintaining laboratory policies and procedures
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of training programs and student performance. Makes modifications of training content and program content as needed
  • Performs clinical testing and results reporting in all areas where training and verification of competency are attained
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Patient Population: Demonstrates knowledge and related competencies of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possesses the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to their age, specific needs and to provide the equitable care needed as described in departmental policies and procedures. Neonates (0-4 weeks), Infant (1-12 months), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Adults (18-64 years), Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Employment Qualifications

Required Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (BSCLS) from an accredited program or a Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science* in addition to graduation from an NAACLS-accredited CLS/MT certificate program OR Bachelor’s Degree in a Biological Science with 5 or more years of on the job training in a hospital health care environment in a specific lab discipline performing high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology and clinical microscopy (categorical or generalist certification required).

Preferred Education: Master’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program

Licensing/ Certification

Licensure/Certification Required: Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or by the National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or American Medical Technologists (AMT) National Certifying Agency or equivalent ASCP Specialty or Categorical certification.

Licensure/Certification Preferred: Certified as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP)

Minimum Qualifications

Years and Type of Required Experience: Minimum of four (4) years of clinical work experience as a Medical Technologist. Depending on the laboratory assignment, work experience requirement may be specific to a particular specialty area such as Microbiology, Immunology, Hematology, Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, Toxicology, etc.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required: Computer skills (MS Office, Spreadsheets, etc.)

Working Conditions: Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. General office environment. May be exposed to adverse weather conditions; cold, hot, dust, wind, etc. ​ May be exposed to high noise levels and bright lights. May be exposed to limited hazardous substances or body fluids. * May be exposed to human blood and other potentially infectious materials. * May have periods of constant interruptions.

* Individuals in this position are required to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment and devices, and learn the policies concerning infection control.
