What are the responsibilities and job description for the Kennel Assistant position at VCA Animal Hospitals?
Do you believe the little things matter?
So do we.
At VCA Parkcrest Animal Hospital, we believe a warm smile, remembering a client's name, celebrating a puppy's first visit, or taking an extra moment to make a nervous pet feel safe can leave just as much of an impact as the medicine we practice.
We call it unreasonable hospitality, and it's at the heart of everything we do. Great medicine brings clients through our doors. Unreasonable hospitality is what keeps them coming back.
We're looking for an enthusiastic, compassionate Part-Time Kennel Assistant to join our boarding team! If you love animals, enjoy staying active, don't mind getting a little dirty, and take pride in making sure every pet feels safe, comfortable, & cared for, we'd love to meet you.
Who We Are
VCA Parkcrest Animal Hospital has been caring for pets in Springfield and the surrounding Ozarks since the late 1960s. We're a busy, AAHA-accredited, five-doctor small animal hospital offering wellness care, surgery, dentistry, diagnostics, boarding, and grooming.
Our boarding facility is unique because it's part of a veterinary hospital. Our boarding guests have a medical team just steps away if something unexpected happens during their stay, providing an extra layer of care and peace of mind.
We also offer a large play yard where every dog gets daily playtime, plus boarding runs with both indoor and outdoor areas that dogs can access throughout the day. Our feline guests enjoy three-level luxury condos with a separate litter-box area. We work hard to make every stay safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.
What You'll Do
As a Kennel Assistant, you'll help keep our boarding guests happy, healthy, clean, and comfortable throughout their stay.
Your day may include:
- Cleaning & disinfecting kennels, runs, condos, and boarding areas
- Feeding, walking, and caring for dogs & cats according to their individual needs
- Providing daily play-yard time and monitoring pets for changes in behavior or wellbeing
- Bathing boarding pets
- Doing laundry and maintaining clean bedding & supplies
- Keeping the hospital & boarding areas clean, organized, and welcoming
- Assisting the medical team with patient care and other hospital needs
- Following safety, sanitation, and animal-care protocols
- Jumping in wherever needed to support your teammates
This is an active, hands-on position with plenty of cleaning, lifting, walking, laundry, and time on your feet. Some days will be busy, messy, and covered in fur—and that's part of the fun!
We'd Love to Meet You If You...
- Genuinely love working with animals
- Are patient, compassionate, and attentive to each pet's individual needs
- Notice the little things and speak up when something doesn't seem right
- Are comfortable handling dogs and cats of different sizes, breeds, and personalities
- Don't mind getting dirty and tackling the less glamorous parts of animal care
- Are dependable, organized, and able to stay focused in a busy environment
- Work well independently and as part of a team
- Have previous animal-care, kennel, veterinary, or customer service experience (a plus, but not required)
Schedule
This is a part-time position averaging fewer than 30 hours per week.
Because our boarding guests need care every day, flexibility is important. You may help cover during busy boarding periods, holidays, or when teammates are away. We believe in taking care of our team, too, and appreciate teammates who support one another when someone needs time away.
Why You'll Love Working Here
If you love animals and want a job where you actually get to spend your day caring for them, this could be the place for you.
You'll work alongside a veterinary team and gain hands-on experience in a veterinary hospital environment while becoming part of a team that believes in supporting one another and doing the little things that make a big difference.
We offer competitive pay, starting at $15/hour, and generous employee discounts on veterinary care for your own pets.
