What are the responsibilities and job description for the Machine Maintenance Technician position at Varstaff?
Varstaff is currently searching for the following:
Q: Can you confirm the number of stories the building is where roofing work may take place?
A: Tallest roofing deck is 3 stories or about 90 feet IIRC.
Q: What type of work is the technician expected to perform on the roof (e.g., inspection, repair, cleaning, equipment checks)?
A: Weekly walks for inspection, no repair, some minor equipment checks. EE will coordinate roofing repairs through a third-party vendor.
Q: Will the technician be required to walk on the roof surface, and if so, is fall protection provided and/or required?
A: Yes, they will with a buddy. They will not work near enough to the edge (less than 6 feet from edge) to require fall protection in most cases.
Q: Is ladder or lift access required to reach the roof?
A: Mostly ladders and Stairs, not commonly by lift but may on occasion.
Q: Will they be working near roof edges or on elevated platforms without guardrails?
A: No.
Q: Additionally, to support compliance with our safety standards, could you please clarify the following:
Will the technician be responsible for any electrical work above standard conduit and wire runs (e.g., panel work or high-voltage tasks)?
A: The expectation for this particular individual will be 24VAC&DC 120V, 240V, and 277V experience . This would be commonly used voltages for wall outlets and lighting. Individuals with more experience may work on 480V items as well.
Q: Are there any duties that may involve working in confined spaces or at heights beyond the roof (e.g., lighting or lift equipment maintenance)?
A: No to the confined spaces work. Yes, to working at height; using scissor and articulating lifts, ladders, etc. Mostly in this case for lighting. Generally, under 30 feet in height.
Are any certifications required or preferred (e.g., OSHA 10/30, Fall Protection, Electrical Safety)?
Q: Any related certifications such as those provided or familiarity with industrial/commercial operations are a plus. A: We will provide training as necessary if needed and will likely re-train for our records. ***********************************
Facilities Maintenance Technician will report to Facilities Manager working in conjunction with the Maintenance Manager. This is a general list of duties that are variable on a daily basis. When there seems to be no Facility work orders pending, the Technician can and will be used for other maintenance duties.

• Landscaping & Grounds Maint. contracting
• Janitorial Contracting
• Fire Alarm Testing – Office
• Annual Fire System Testing coordination
• Annual insurance inspection (FM Global) ( Maintenance Super and Facilities Maint. combined)
• Fire Chief Inspection ( HSE Mgr., Maintenance Super and Facilities Maint. combined)
• EPACS system – Equipment up keep (access control is still under HSE Mgr. responsibility)
• Office furniture Upkeep requests
• Office Elevator inspections / maint.
• Roof
• Plumbing - Facilities
• Floor/Concrete
• BLDG infrastructure (i.e. columns, siding, floor, etc.) Exterior Painting
• Fire System Testing
• Banbury (i.e. elevator and lift equipment)
• Facility Lighting
• General facility electrical including conduit and running wires
----Any work performed by the MT that can’t be completed due to expertise or knowledge, MT should contact the manager before hiring outside contractors. This would be to try to solve the matter with expertise in the maintenance group before hiring outside contractors.
---- Contact to outside contractors for bids needs to be communicated to the Facilities Manager and discussed before doing so. This would include bidding for facility repairs and updates. Facility Manager should be included on all bidding contracts via email after the discussion.
---- When technician is working on a priority job, any interference moving them off that job should be communicated to the manager before pulling off priority job.
