What We Look For In a Chess Tutor

Ability to explain opening systems, middlegame planning, and endgame theory while preparing students for scholastic tournaments, rated competitions, and strategic thinking development.
• Conceptual Teaching & Problem-Solving: Skilled at teaching tactical pattern recognition, strategic planning, and game analysis. Guides students through identifying tactical opportunities, evaluating positions, developing opening repertoires, executing common endgame techniques, and analyzing their own games for improvement. Emphasizes critical thinking and decision-making skills while connecting chess to logical reasoning, patience, and problem-solving skills applicable beyond the board.
• Curriculum Awareness & Adaptive Instruction: Familiar with chess instruction progressions and common challenges such as transitioning from tactical to positional play, calculating variations accurately, and managing tournament time pressure. Adapts instruction using puzzle practice, game analysis, and progressive difficulty exercises to support students from absolute beginners learning piece movement through advanced tournament players seeking rating improvement.
• Effective Teaching Methods: Ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
