Job Title: Controller

Company Description: Varent Holdings is a dynamic, quickly growing holding company with diverse investments across multiple industries. Our main industries include medical receivable financing/factoring, software development, MRI centers, real estate investments and management, coffee shops, and more. Thanks to several new financing transactions, we are planning to double our medical financing operations and our SaaS business in the next two years. To help accomplish this, we are seeking a very detail oriented, driven, hands-on, roll-up your sleeves and dig in, Controller to join our growing team.
Job Description: As the Controller, reporting directly to the CFO, you will have an opportunity for daily interaction with the CEO/Founder and other key executives, you will run the accounting operations and related activities for the parent-holding company and its 10 subsidiaries. We are seeking a professional with a willingness to understand each business, design and document controls, processes, and systems around those operations. The ideal candidate will uphold the highest level of professionalism, be willing and able to dig into details and change things as needed, learn the accounting needs for multiple operating companies, train staff, and work with the CFO in meeting the Company’s goals. We can not emphasize the need for attention to detail in this role, with many moving parts and entities under our control this role needs someone that can use technology to help them manage all the parts.
Major responsibilities include the following, but are not limited to:
- Ensure the accurate preparation of the books and records for all entities (some report monthly, some quarterly)
- Develop an effective and efficient 10 day or less close process for all entities, ensuring accurate and timely reporting
- Oversight of cash collections and disbursements, and developing strategies to optimize the processes
- Preparing, analyzing, and reporting financial information,
- Designing and maintaining reports and supporting information as needed to support the financials
- Ensuring the company adheres to all relevant laws and regulations
- Working with outside professional services including auditors and tax firms
- Determining an efficient organizational structure for files, contracts, and agreements
- Work with management to establish financial and operating benchmarks, budgets, program monitoring, and reporting standards
- Implement consistent/efficient accounting policies, best practices, and procedures that can be utilized across all entities
- Develop, implement, and redesign as needed an internal control structure to maximize protection of company assets
- Oversee and support accounting team with dynamic leadership that creates an environment of trust and productivity and career growth for your team
- We are a small team, so we work closely with other departments, wear many hats, and this role must want to mentor and grow their team
Our ideal candidate will have strong accounting skills, be analytical, organized, and able to meet strict deadlines but also be fluid and open to new ideas from management as well as presenting ideas for how to do things better and more efficient. We need someone who is proficient in technology (ideally has used and is familiar with Dynamics Pro (Business Central) accounting software), can communicate in a clear and easily understood style and can adapt their communication style to that of the ownership, familiar with US GAAP standards and regulatory requirements while understanding the needs of a privately held company (i.e. be proficient in cash and accrual accounting and everything in between), be willing to learn new business and industries as needed.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting is required, masters and a CPA a plus
- 5 years of hands-on professional accounting experience being the one making decisions on how to record entries, reading contracts to determine when an accounting treatment differs from the normal course of business, and mentoring staff.
- Preference will be given to those candidates who have spent at least a couple years in public accounting
- Experience in Windows environment software, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Power BI, Slack, accounting software and history of using Dynamics Pro (Business Central), a plus
- Desire to make a difference and implement new procedures and controls as we grow, and willingness to be part of a small team that wants to work outside the box
