Job Description:
As a Part-Time Hospice Medical Director at Varco Hospice, you will have a vital role in ensuring the highest standards of patient care in our hospice program. Your responsibilities will extend across multiple hospice locations, encompassing oversight of physician, nursing, social work, therapy, and counseling areas within the hospice. Your goal is to consistently meet the needs of patients and their families by working closely with the Administrator, Clinical Leaders, and the patient's attending physician.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee the implementation of medical and clinical programs to ensure excellent and safe patient/family care.
- Collaborate with leadership and the patient's primary physician to establish and implement clinical programs aligned with patient and family needs.
- Certify and recertify, in writing, that a patient is terminally ill based on clinical judgment.
- Ensure compliance with all medical care regulations and standards, consulting nursing staff on specific patient care issues.
- Provide medical leadership to the interdisciplinary team, hospice staff, and hospice physicians.
- Conduct regular meetings with hospice physicians and work collaboratively with leadership to develop care protocols and policies related to medical activities.
- Audit hospice physician narratives and Face-to-face narratives for compliance and billing review.
- Promote the philosophy, mission statement, and administrative policies of Varco Hospice to ensure the quality and consistency of patient care.
- Participate in the Interdisciplinary Group (IDG) meetings.
Education: Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy required.
Licensure:
Current unrestricted State license to practice medicine. Board certification in family practice, internal medicine, or palliative care is preferred.
Experience:
Preferred four (4) years of experience in healthcare, with a combination of acute care and hospice care/public health. Prior supervisor/management experience. Experience with terminally ill patients and effective pain management and symptom control.
Skills:
- Demonstrated interpersonal, supervisory, and management skills with the ability to communicate effectively.
- Proven decision-making and financial management skills.
- Working knowledge of regulations and reimbursement in hospice care.
- Respected by physician peers and the ability to act as a liaison from the hospice to other physicians.
- Commitment to hospice philosophy and care techniques.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
- Complete required work daily.
- Cope with work involving ill, disabled, and end-of-life patients.
- Move equipment and supplies necessary for job functions.
- Read in a 12-point or larger type, speak and write English effectively.
- Meet the health requirements of the agency.
- Abide by all occupational safety and bloodborne pathogen protocols.
Key Accountabilities:
- Responsible for the Medical Component of Varco Hospice's patient care program across multiple sites.
