Position Summary: Vanguard University of Southern California seeks an exceptional educator with a terminal degree in Music Theory, Composition, or a closely related field who is passionate about mentoring students in a warm, welcoming, and diverse community deeply committed to following Jesus Christ. This faculty member will teach undergraduate courses in music theory and aural skills, support curriculum development, and actively contribute to the vibrant life of the Department of Music. Essential Functions:
- Teach undergraduate courses in music theory, aural skills, and related subjects, fostering both technical skill and spiritual formation.
- Support curriculum development and innovation in theory and musicianship training.
- Mentor students across a broad spectrum of musical interests, including performance, commercial music, worship arts, and music education, with sensitivity to cultural and musical diversity.
- Teach other courses as assigned to meet departmental needs.
- Serve actively on departmental, college, and university committees in support of the institution's mission.
- Contribute to departmental service including recruitment and student support that reflects Vanguard's mission.
- Maintain active scholarly, creative, or professional engagement in music theory, composition, or related fields consistent with faith-based inquiry.
- Participate fully in campus life, including chapel services and faculty community initiatives, embodying Vanguard's Christian mission.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Music Theory, Composition, or a closely related field (Doctorate preferred).
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate music theory and aural skills.
- Strong musicianship and analytical abilities.
- Evidence of scholarly or creative work in music theory or composition.
- A vibrant and mature Christian faith with a clear commitment to the integration of faith and learning, consistent with Vanguard University's mission. Preferred Qualifications
- Doctorate in Music Theory, Composition, or a related field.
- Broad expertise in multiple areas of music theory, including traditional tonal, post-tonal, and contemporary practices.
- Experience mentoring students from diverse musical backgrounds-classical, commercial, worship arts.
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues within the Department of Music and across the university.
Salary:
Full-time position. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience. Highly qualified candidates may be considered for an appointment to an endowed professorship with additional compensation.
Assistant Professor: $60,595 to $81,501
Associate Professor: $70,676 to $95,190
Professor: $82,031 to $113,974
Placement at an appropriate rank (e.g., Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor) and initial salary are dependent upon education and experience and are based on Vanguard's faculty compensation schedule. The upper range is reserved for candidates who demonstrate the highest level of proficiency within a particular rank. Vanguard University also offers a very competitive and generous benefits package.
Vanguard offers both tenure-track and term faculty contracts; the type of contract offered will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications at the time of hire.
