Accounting Manager Process Improvement & Controls

Our client, a large, established financial services organization, is seeking an experienced accounting professional to lead reconciliation process improvement, internal controls enhancement, and audit remediation initiatives.

This is a project-focused position responsible for evaluating existing accounting reconciliation processes, identifying weaknesses, redesigning procedures, and implementing sustainable improvements.

The ideal candidate combines a strong technical accounting and reconciliation background with demonstrated experience leading accounting process redesign, resolving control deficiencies, and collaborating across complex organizations.

This is not a traditional financial reporting or month-end close position. The emphasis is on improving accounting processes, strengthening controls, and driving initiatives from assessment through implementation.

This role is fully remote.

Accounting Manager Responsibilities

  • Lead initiatives to evaluate, redesign, and improve general ledger, balance sheet, bank, and clearing account reconciliation processes.
  • Assess existing reconciliation procedures, accounting certification practices, documentation, and internal controls to identify gaps and improvement opportunities.
  • Develop and implement standardized reconciliation procedures, templates, review criteria, and exception management processes.
  • Lead remediation efforts related to accounting reconciliation deficiencies, audit findings, and internal control weaknesses.
  • Investigate complex accounting issues, identify root causes, and develop sustainable corrective solutions.
  • Establish or enhance clearing account oversight, aging analysis, exception reporting, and escalation procedures.
  • Partner with accounting leadership, internal stakeholders, and business teams to implement process improvements and resolve outstanding issues.
  • Evaluate reconciliation completeness, accuracy, documentation quality, and potential financial statement risks.
  • Develop process narratives, accounting procedures, training materials, and knowledge-transfer documentation.
  • Provide guidance to accounting resources supporting reconciliation analysis and remediation activities.
  • Manage assigned initiatives, track progress, communicate risks, and drive deliverables through completion.

Accounting Manager Qualifications

  • 8–10 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within a large or complex organization.
  • Extensive experience with general ledger, balance sheet, and bank account reconciliations.
  • Demonstrated experience leading accounting process improvement or reconciliation redesign initiatives.
  • Experience addressing audit findings, internal control deficiencies, or accounting remediation projects.
  • Strong technical accounting knowledge and ability to evaluate complex reconciliation issues.
  • Experience developing accounting procedures, reconciliation templates, controls, and supporting documentation.
  • Proven ability to lead cross-functional initiatives and influence stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and project management capabilities.
  • Experience with enterprise accounting systems and advanced Excel-based analysis.
  • Ability to work independently, establish priorities, and drive projects through completion.

Preferred

  • Hands-on experience with Workday Financials, particularly accounting certifications, reconciliations, or close controls.
  • Experience improving reconciliation oversight and internal control frameworks.
  • Experience implementing sustainable accounting process improvements across multiple business units.
  • Experience supporting audit remediation within a large, regulated, or complex financial environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred; equivalent experience considered.
  • CPA designation is not required.
