Job Description

The Manager, Leadership Development Programs is part of the Owen Graduate School of Management’s Leadership Development Program at Vanderbilt University and is a key individual contributor. This position will oversee and execute the strategy, design, implementation and evaluation of leadership development programs and programming. Reporting directly to the Executive Director of the Leadership Development Program. The position manages programming across 580 graduate business students and 13,000 alumni. 

The Owen Graduate School of Management (OGSM) is a professional school at Vanderbilt University, located in Nashville, Tennessee, focused on graduate-level business education. OGSM’s mission is to create opportunities for its faculty, staff, and students to discover, grow, and thrive in business and beyond. OGSM recognizes discovery in traditional forms, such as scholarly research, intellectual curiosity, and curricular learning. But it also celebrates discovery unique to the human experience, that is, the art of becoming, which is lived through a desire to connect with others, to find meaning in work and relationships, and to create something new. Duties and Responsibilities
STRATEGIC PLANNING
  • Develop in conjunction with the Executive Director the strategic goals for Leadership Development, including establishing annual priorities for Leadership Development.

  • Work with Executive and Faculty Director to support Owen’s mission, values and strategic initiatives.

  • Conduct mid-year and end-of-year strategic planning sessions to calibrate with goals of the program.

  • Continually keep an eye towards future innovation in the leadership development space.

  • Evaluate programs for ongoing continuous improvement and year-over-year learning.

SPECIALIZED MASTERS PROGRAMS

  • Manage relationships between LDP and faculty directors to continuously meet the strategic imperatives and program objectives for each of the graduate degree programs and business partners, all while keeping in mind the goals and objectives of LDP.   

  • Continuously communicate with faculty directors and program committees throughout the year, while also annually reviewing budget, program planning, and EOY process improvements.

  • Leverage data to surface pain points, problem solve, innovate and determine key objectives.

  • Manage budgets for specific programs and projects. 

  • Conduct needs assessment and design LDP programming to meet needs of each unique audience and program, including both new and existing programs.

LEADERSHIP ASSESSMENTS

  • Conduct Hogan assessment debrief workshops for students as needed, providing an overview of the construction and purpose of Hogan assessment instruments, as well as guidance for interpreting individual assessment results.

  • Conduct one-on-one follow-on debriefs for Hogan assessment results of students across all programs, providing basic guidance and coaching to students seeking to use the Hogan assessment results as a road map for ongoing professional development.

1:1 COACHING/COUNSELING

  • Provide ongoing one-on-one leadership coaching with all Owen students as needed to help further their ongoing leadership development, help them process through a specific pain point, or learn from experience.

STUDENT SUCCESS 

  • Partner with LDP teammates to deliver consistent, clear and ongoing communication to the students, including infographics, emails, presentations, etc.

  • Partner with student organizations, staff and faculty to drive an inclusive Owen environment.

  • Match students with coaches throughout all the degreed programs at Owen, including ongoing management and evaluation of the match process.

  • Serve as a relationship manager for a designated subset of the student population.

  • Refer students to other campus resources as needed.

  • Partner with Career Management Center and Academic and Student Affairs teams to promote student success.

WORKSHOP DELIVERY & FACILITATION

  • Deliver and facilitate both in-person and virtual workshops and group discussions. 

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  • Manage and execute day-to-day operations for specific LDP programs and projects, including but not limited to planning, logistics, space reservations, inputting and updating project management software, and building and updating participant tracking.

  • Execute process improvements identified ongoing and at mid-year and year-end planning sessions.

MARKETING & PODCAST

  • Co-manage the One Thousand Ways to Lead Podcast and student hosts.  Partner with Marketing Communications team to increase audience, monitor metrics, and promote and market podcast both internally and externally. 

  • Provide content for Inside Owen. 

  • Refresh external website as needed.

SPECIAL PROJECTS 

  • Other duties as assigned

Supervisory Relationships

This position does not have supervisory responsibility; this position reports administratively and functionally to the Executive Director of the Leadership Development Program.

Education and Certifications

  • 10 years of management experience working in talent management, leadership development, succession planning, and/or organizational development

  • An understanding of the leadership development landscape

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution is required; Advanced degree preferred (MBA or related Masters)

Experience and Skills

  • Passion for developing future leaders

  • Record of accomplishment in industry or academia 

  • Significant experience working cross-functionally with a diverse population

  • Proven program and project management skills required; must be extremely comfortable and like working with details

  • Willingness to perform data entry and ability to compile and perform data analysis

  • Capability to align departmental tactics and organizational strategies

  • Ability to influence and collaborate with multiple constituents within and outside of Owen 

  • Style and demeanor to work effectively with and coach students 

  • Ability to flex between being a coach, facilitator, mentor and consultant within an individual interaction or facilitated group session in order to meet the needs of the student and the goals of the Leadership Development Program

  • Proven ability to maintain confidentiality

  • Independent, self-motivated and self-directed person who is also highly collaborative in nature

  • Consistent and clear written and verbal communicator

  • Understanding and knowledge of executive coaching

  • Experience interviewing talent for an organization or as a manager

  • Proven track record of continuous improvement and innovation

  • Track record of being accountable to a budget

  • Hogan Assessment certification and familiarity with Korn/Ferry leadership competencies and VOICES 360 instrument preferred

  • Comfortable working with new and existing technology

  • Social media experience in a professional setting is preferred
