The Parts Buyer is responsible for sourcing, purchasing, and managing inventory of parts and supplies necessary to maintain the company's fleet of trucks, trailers, and equipment. This position ensures timely availability of quality parts at competitive pricing while supporting shop productivity, minimizing downtime, and maintaining accurate inventory controls.
Requirements
Responsibilities:
- Source and purchase parts, tools, and shop supplies for fleet operations.
- Negotiate pricing, terms, and delivery schedules with vendors.
- Develop and maintain strong supplier relationships.
- Evaluate supplier performance based on cost, availability, and delivery.
- Identify alternative sourcing solutions during shortages or emergencies.
- Maintain appropriate inventory levels to support preventive maintenance and repairs.
- Monitor usage trends and adjust stocking levels accordingly.
- Prevent overstocking and obsolete inventory.
- Ensure proper labeling, organization, and storage of parts.
- Track parts spending and identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Compare OEM and aftermarket options where appropriate.
- Review invoices for accuracy and proper cost allocation
- Coordinate closely with Shop Foreman and mechanics to prioritize parts needs.
- Expedite critical parts to reduce equipment downtime.
- Oversee pickups and deliveries for Parts Driver.
- Maintain accurate records in fleet management and accounting systems
- Properly assign parts costs to units or cost centers.
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of experience in heavy-duty truck or equipment parts purchasing.
- Working knowledge of Class 7 and Class 8 truck components.
- Strong negotiation and cost analysis skills.
- High attention to detail and organizational ability.
- Proficiency with inventory and fleet management software.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced maintenance environment
- Be available to work overtime on short notice as needed.
- Able to operate with minimal supervision.
