What are the responsibilities and job description for the Government Relations Manager position at Van Scoyoc Associates?
Manager of Government Relations – Work closely with and report directly to VSA Vice Presidents managing the legislative and federal relations needs of a broad portfolio of clients primarily in the health care sector. The position will provide critical advocacy in support of client priorities at the federal level associated with legislative policy, regulatory issues, and programmatic funding. This is a hybrid position requiring on-site work that includes options for remote work as well. The office is located on the Wharf in Washington, DC. The following is a list of the duties and responsibilities the position will entail:
- Monitor and prepare updates on legislative activities including committee hearings, markups, bill introductions, briefings, and press conferences in the House and Senate
- Identify regulatory activities and funding opportunities within the Executive Branch agencies
- Coordinate project authorization and appropriations requests to Congressional offices on behalf of clients
- Conduct public policy and other strategic research for existing or potential VSA clients
- Provide VSA Vice Presidents and clients with timely developments occurring in Congress and at the Federal Agencies on topical issues
- Prepare weekly newsletters and monthly reports for VSA clients chronicling relevant legislative & executive branch activities
- Assist in the preparation and briefing of VSA clients prior to Congressional office and Executive branch meetings
- Assist VPs in scheduling Congressional, Executive Branch, and other relevant meetings for VSA clients
- Assist VPs in drafting prospective client proposals and other business development activities
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate will have at least two to three years of Capitol Hill, Executive Branch, or experience in lobbying and/or public policy. Working knowledge of the legislative and federal branches, including procedures, operations & functions, and overall political process is required. Candidates need to possess strong written and verbal communication skills, as well as be highly organized with the ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. Knowledge of health care policy is desirable; passion for improving the health care system is essential. Applicants must also be detail-oriented, have research experience, take initiative in problem solving, possess the ability to work independently with limited direction at times, and have a positive attitude. Candidates with relevant internship experience and public policy background are also encouraged to apply.
