Valley Medical Group is looking for a Lead Medical Assistant to join our Family Practice team and work in our Northampton Health Center. If you are looking for a dynamic environment, this is your opportunity!

Position: Lead Medical Assistant

Location: Northampton, MA

Hours: 40 hours, Monday-Friday between 8:00am and 5:30pm, with one 9:00am-6:00pm shift, plus an occasional morning weekend shift for urgent care rotation. Hours may vary depending on department needs. Exact schedule to be discussed at time of interview.

As the Lead MA, you will be responsible for supporting the provider and clinical team to assure that all of the patients’ needs are addressed at every visit.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist RN Team Leader with daily tasks: complete daily scheduling of clinical staff, discuss staff assignment changes with RN Team Leader.
  • Assist clinical staff with assignments and projects, to ensure the day runs smoothly and patient care needs are met.
  • Supports efforts with RN Team leader to ensure daily team huddles take place.
  • Participates in team meetings, and shares information from team meetings with MA team and other members of the clinical team.
  • Develops and maintains mechanisms to keep staff informed and lines of communication open.
  • Demonstrates optimism and enthusiasm in daily interactions with staff.
  • Supports and adheres to VMG policies and procedures, and is a lead in supporting staff in access to these in support of patient care.
  • In collaboration with the RN Team Leader, ensures training and successful completion of clinical staff competency checklist and annual trainings for the clinical team. Supports staff who need assistance with clinical skills to maintain competency.
  • Provide education and training for Point of Care Testing, support competency development and completion for new staff and act as a resource to troubleshoot issues with POC equipment.
  • Looks for new and innovative ways to support the work of the team in collaboration with the RN Team Leader. Supports quality improvement projects and uses PDSA methodology with the RN Team Leader.
  • Prepare patients for the office visit by obtaining accurate vital signs, taking a history, performing medication reconciliation and reviewing allergies. Ordering necessary tests required for the visit to ensure satisfaction of the QM Tab measures.
  • Monitor provider and teams clinical inboxes for red flags and urgent issues and ensure that they are reviewed by a provider with an instant message, or face-to-face discussion and entered into a patient case and sent to the provider for review.
  • Ensure the accuracy of the EMR by documenting all POC testing, wound care and procedures in the EMR including the outcome. i.e. ear flush with clearing of ear canal; nebulizer with relief of symptoms.
  • Prepare EMR for appointment using QM tab, lab results and social history and gather information from other sources such as Baystate Medical, Cooley Dickinson, etc. and order any necessary tests, immunizations, labs to assure that the QM tab is satisfied.
  • Communicates effectively with providers in reviewing daily appointments and to maintain patient flow.
  • Complete charges for all services performed by clinical staff in the billing tab of EMR to ensure proper payment
  • Attend all required meetings and participate on committees as requested. Participate in orientation of new staff
  • Employee may be expected to travel to other VMG off-site locations requiring individual transportation.


Required Qualifications:

  • Medical Assisting program certificate, EMT license, or CNA license
  • Current CPR certification
  • EMR experience (Athena preferred)
  • Experience working as a Medical Assistant, EMT, or CNA


Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • CMA or RMA certification strongly preferred
  • Experience administering vaccines
