Reports To: Manufacturing Engineer
Position Overview
Valley Manufacturing is looking for a detail-oriented SolidWorks Drafter to support our engineering and production teams. This position will work closely under the direction of our Manufacturing Engineer to create, revise, and maintain accurate drawings and models for fabricated metal components and assemblies.
The ideal candidate will have experience using SolidWorks and a basic understanding of manufacturing processes such as laser cutting, forming, welding, machining, and assembly. This is a good opportunity for someone who enjoys hands-on manufacturing and wants to develop their engineering and design skills in a growing company.
Primary Responsibilities
- Create and revise 2D drawings and 3D models using SolidWorks.
- Prepare production-ready drawings for fabricated metal parts and assemblies.
- Work from customer drawings, sketches, samples, and engineering direction.
- Create accurate dimensions, tolerances, hole locations, bend details, weld callouts, and other manufacturing information.
- Assist with converting customer files into usable production drawings.
- Update existing drawings to reflect engineering changes and revision levels.
- Create and maintain bills of materials for assemblies.
- Organize and maintain drawing files, part numbers, and revision records.
- Review drawings for completeness and manufacturability before releasing them to production.
- Work with the Manufacturing Engineer, programmers, operators, and production supervisors to resolve drawing or design questions.
- Assist with measuring existing parts and creating drawings through reverse engineering.
- Support prototype development and continuous-improvement projects.
- Make sure customer and internal drawing standards are followed.
- Perform other engineering and drafting duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Working knowledge of SolidWorks is required.
- Ability to create and modify parts, assemblies, and production drawings.
- Ability to read and understand manufacturing drawings.
- Understanding of dimensions, tolerances, and basic GD&T is preferred.
- Familiarity with sheet metal design and fabricated metal components is strongly preferred.
- Basic understanding of laser cutting, press-brake forming, welding, machining, and assembly is helpful.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and drawing revisions.
- Ability to communicate effectively with engineering and production employees.
- Willingness to ask questions and learn Valley Manufacturing’s equipment, processes, and drafting standards.
Education and Experience
- Associate degree, technical certification, or coursework in drafting, mechanical design, manufacturing technology, or a related field is preferred.
- Previous drafting or SolidWorks experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.
- Relevant hands-on experience may be considered in place of formal education.
- Entry-level candidates with strong SolidWorks skills and a willingness to learn are encouraged to apply.
Preferred Experience
- SolidWorks Sheet Metal.
- Weldments and fabricated assemblies.
- Creating flat patterns and bend drawings.
- Bills of materials and assembly drawings.
- Reverse engineering existing components.
- Working with DXF, DWG, STEP, and other customer-supplied files.
- Experience in a metal fabrication or OEM manufacturing environment.
What We Are Looking For
We are looking for someone who is accurate, dependable, and comfortable working closely with both engineering and production. This person should be able to take direction from our Manufacturing Engineer, complete assigned drafting work, and communicate when additional information is needed.
The right candidate will have an interest in learning how parts are actually produced—not just how they look on a computer screen. As experience develops, there may be opportunities to take on additional design, engineering, programming, and project responsibilities.
