Job Summary
The Rental Department Manager oversees the daily operations for the Rental Department at Valley Lumber & Rental. This role is hands-on and requires maintaining rental equipment, coordinating customer rentals, and driving business growth. The ideal candidate is comfortable wearing multiple hats and working closely with leadership to improve efficiency and profitability.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day rental operations, including reservations, check-outs, returns, and billing
- Inspect equipment for safety, cleanliness, and functionality before and after rental
- Coordinate routine maintenance and repairs to minimize downtime
- Track inventory and ensure accurate availability of tools and equipment
- Build strong relationships with customers, contractors, and local businesses
- Handle customer inquiries, quotes, and issue resolution quickly and professionally
- Assist with deliveries and pickups when needed
- Monitor pricing, competitor activity, and local market trends
- Maintain compliance with safety standards and company policies
- Support other teams and leadership as needed
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree preferred
- Self-starter and takes initiative
- Team player attitude
- 3 years of experience in equipment rental, construction, or small business operations
- Previous supervisory or team leadership experience, preferred
- Strong mechanical aptitude (ability to understand and assess equipment condition)
- Valid driver’s license
Preferred Skills
- Experience with construction or landscaping equipment (e.g., skid steers, excavators, lifts, power tools)
- Familiarity with rental software or POS systems
- Basic knowledge of equipment maintenance and troubleshooting
- Strong customer service and relationship-building skills
- Ability to multitask and adapt in a fast-paced, small-team environment
- Basic financial skills (tracking revenue, expenses, and margins)
Work Environment
- Combination of office, front counter, and outdoor yard/shop environment
- Frequent physical activity (lifting, walking, equipment handling)
- May require early mornings, evenings, and Saturdays
