MYP Health, Physical Education, and Student Leadership Teacher (Grades 6-8)

Position Summary:

Valley Inquiry Charter School is seeking a dynamic, student-centered educator to serve as a full-time Middle Years Program (MYP) Health, Physical Education, and Student Leadership Teacher for grades 6-8. As an IB Candidate School implementing the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, Valley Inquiry is committed to developing internationally minded students who are active, compassionate, and lifelong learners.

The successful candidate will create engaging learning experiences that promote physical wellness, health literacy, personal growth, leadership development, and community engagement. Through inquiry-based learning, students will develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to lead healthy, balanced lives while making meaningful contributions to their school and community.

This position includes teaching MYP Physical and Health Education courses and Leadership electives, supporting student leadership initiatives, school culture events, service-learning opportunities, and student voice throughout the school community.

Full-Time MYP Health, Physical Education, and Student Leadership Teacher (Grades 6-8)

Salary:

Salary range: $43,757.99–$68,218.44 depending on years of teaching experience, licensure, endorsements, education, and contracted hours.

Essential Responsibilities:

Instructional Design and Facilitation

  • Design and facilitate engaging, inquiry-based learning experiences aligned with MYP Physical and Health Education standards, Oregon State Standards, and Valley Inquiry's mission and vision.
  • Develop units of inquiry that connect physical wellness, health education, leadership, service, and real-world applications.
  • Foster student agency by providing opportunities for choice, reflection, goal setting, and self-assessment.
  • Integrate MYP Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills throughout instruction.
  • Utilize a variety of instructional strategies that actively engage all learners and promote critical thinking, collaboration, communication, and personal growth.
  • Support students in developing lifelong habits related to physical activity, health, wellness, and self-management.

Physical and Health Education

  • Teach developmentally appropriate physical education and health curriculum for students in grades 6-8.
  • Promote physical fitness, movement skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, and healthy decision-making.
  • Support students in understanding physical, social, emotional, and mental wellness.
  • Provide opportunities for students to set personal fitness and wellness goals and monitor their growth over time.
  • Ensure safe participation in all physical activities and maintain appropriate safety procedures and equipment standards.

Student Leadership Development

  • Facilitate Leadership courses that develop communication, collaboration, service, organization, and leadership skills.
  • Empower students to take active roles in shaping school culture and community.
  • Guide student-led projects, assemblies, spirit activities, service-learning opportunities, Student Council initiatives, and school-wide events.
  • Foster student voice and leadership through meaningful opportunities for participation and decision-making.
  • Support students in planning, organizing, and reflecting on leadership initiatives and community impact.

Assessment and Student Growth

  • Utilize formative and summative assessment practices aligned with MYP assessment criteria.
  • Provide timely, meaningful feedback that promotes student reflection and growth.
  • Use assessment data to inform instructional decisions and support individual student success.
  • Support students in setting goals, monitoring progress, and reflecting on learning and personal development.

Learning Environment and Student Relationships

  • Establish a safe, inclusive, and positive learning environment that promotes belonging, respect, and engagement.
  • Build strong relationships with students that support academic, social, emotional, and physical well-being.
  • Implement restorative and proactive approaches to behavior and community building.
  • Promote a culture of responsibility, teamwork, and mutual respect.

Collaboration and Professional Growth

  • Collaborate with MYP teachers, specialists, support staff, and administrators to strengthen student learning and school culture.
  • Participate in collaborative planning, Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), and school improvement initiatives.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development related to IB philosophy, inquiry-based instruction, adolescent development, health education, physical education, and leadership.
  • Reflect on instructional practices and use feedback to continually improve effectiveness.

Family and Community Partnerships

  • Maintain regular communication with families regarding student growth, participation, and achievement.
  • Foster positive partnerships with families and community organizations.
  • Support community-building opportunities that strengthen connections between school and families.

School Contributions

  • Support school-wide activities, assemblies, field trips, service projects, community celebrations, and special events.
  • Assist with student leadership initiatives, school spirit activities, and school traditions.
  • Fulfill assigned supervision duties and responsibilities.
  • Contribute positively to the mission, vision, and culture of Valley Inquiry Charter School.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Education, Health Education, Physical Education, or a related field.
  • Valid Oregon Teaching License with appropriate endorsement(s) or ability to obtain licensure prior to employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build positive relationships with middle school students.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, organizational, and classroom management skills.

Preferred

  • Experience teaching middle school students.
  • Experience in physical education, health education, leadership development, student activities, or related fields.
  • Experience with the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (MYP) or other inquiry-based educational models.
  • Experience facilitating service-learning, student leadership, advisory, or extracurricular programs.
  • Training or experience in culturally responsive teaching and restorative practices.
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills, particularly in Spanish, are highly valued and considered an asset in supporting communication and partnership with families, but are not required.
  • Master's degree or advanced coursework in education, health, physical education, leadership, or a related field.
