Valley Career & Technical Center
VCTC is seeking a full-time Cosmetology Instructor. We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic person interested in sharing their knowledge and experience in Cosmetology and/or related areas to prepare the next generation of highly trained employees.
EDUCATIONAL and PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrate the ability and willingness to instruct, evaluate and supervise high school students in Cosmetology.
- Hold a current Virginia state license in cosmetology or barbering and have a minimum of five (5) experience as a stylist in a licensed salon of facility. Previous teaching or training experience preferred.
- Possess or be willing to obtain valid Virginia Technical Professional license.
- Demonstrate evidence of the leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary to work effectively with high school students, parents, business and industry representatives and school administration or related field. Last work experience must be no older than 2 years from current time.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE
- Strong knowledge of theoretical and practices in cosmetology.
- Strong knowledge of hair cutting and styling, safety and infection control.
- Knowledge of chemical processes relative to permanent waves, relaxers, lightening, and coloring hair.
- Proven understanding of skin care, facials, manicures, pedicures and nail enhancements.
- Proven experience with professionalism, client consultation, business communication and developing team work.
- Basic understanding of salon management and related business practices.
- Basic knowledge of State Board requirements for licensure as a barber, cosmetologist and esthetician.
ROLES and RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervises student conduct to ensure that labs/classrooms provide an orderly, safe and disciplined environment conducive to productivity.
- Maintain a well-organized, safe, clean lab and/or classroom.
- Advises students of the importance of safety in relation to handling tools and working in a salon/professional setting.
- Builds strong relationships with students.
- Demonstrates a continued willingness to learn and apply new skills based on current research and best practices.
- Uses appropriate instructional strategies to promote student learning.
- Uses comprehensive materials, technology, and resources to promote the development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.
- Maintains an inventory of equipment and usage of materials in order to minimize loss or abuse.
- Keeps in contact with business and industry so that the curriculum can be updated to reflect changes in high-tech society.
