The Smog Technician is responsible for performing emissions inspections, diagnostics, and repairs to ensure vehicles comply with state and federal environmental standards. This role conducts smog checks, identifies and resolves issues with emission control systems, and maintains accurate records in accordance with California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) requirements. The Smog Technician works closely with the Service Manager and customers to explain test results and repair recommendations, while maintaining a safe, organized work environment and delivering high quality service that supports customer satisfaction and regulatory compliance.
Requirements:- Perform smog checks and emissions inspections in compliance with BAR regulations; operate and maintain smog testing equipment.
- Identify and diagnose emission system issues; complete necessary repairs or adjustments to bring vehicles into compliance.
- Accurately record test results, repair actions, and customer information; ensure documentation is properly filed and available for audits.
- Communicate inspection results and repair recommendations clearly to customers and service advisors; provide professional, courteous service.
- Follow all safety procedures when handling vehicles, equipment, and hazardous materials; maintain a clean, organized work area.

- Stay current with manufacturer training, technical bulletins, and new diagnostic tools. Participate in ongoing education to enhance skills and support department growth.

- Utilize Tekion CRM System for tracking service, activities and managing customer relationships.
- Perform other duties as reasonably assigned.
Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical or vocational training in automotive repair preferred.
- Valid California Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) smog check inspector and repair technician license required.
- Minimum 2 years of experience in automotive service or emissions testing.
- Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
- Strong knowledge of automotive repair processes, diagnostic procedures, electrical skills, and safety standards.
