Valence College Prep, a 5th-8th grade charter school in Queens, seeks a dedicated English New Language Specialist (EL Specialist). Valence College Prep opened in Fall 2019 with 112 fifth graders and reached full enrollment in the Fall of 2022 with 448 scholars. Job Summary
As a school, our first core belief is that excellent instruction yields strong academic performance. The importance of this belief is magnified for our scholars learning English, who comprise 30% of our student population. The English New Language Learning Specialist will ensure that ELLs across the school are provided with the necessary support to succeed in the classroom, from push-in and pull-out supports. The EL Specialist will also co-teach Advisory and Small Group Instruction, providing support that scholars need to excel. All teachers report to an instructional leader and participate in weekly collaboration, coaching, and professional development to maximize their positive impact on our scholars.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare Valence College Prep curricular materials to provide push-in and pull-out supports to ELL scholars, as well as direct English language standalone instruction, to ensure their academic success and development of English language skills
- Implement Valence College Prep’s classroom routines and operational procedures to provide a consistent experience and expectations for scholars
- Provide scholars with frequent and accurate academic and behavioral feedback
- Participate actively in frequent professional development, coaching, and collaboration, and promptly implement coaching feedback into teaching practice
- Communicate weekly with families
- Collect, analyze, and track multiple forms of scholar achievement data for purposes of targeting intervention, guiding instructional next steps, and improving practice
- Collaborate with Special Education Teachers and your coach to provide accommodations for the success of ELL scholars with special needs
- Step in as a teacher leader on ad hoc tasks and projects when necessary to support and build a strong school environment

- Minimum two years of urban teaching with a substantial ELL population preferred
- New York State teacher license/certification required
- Dual certification in Special Education or TESOL preferred
- Spanish language proficiency preferred
- Proficiency in technological tools, including Google Sheets, Google Slides, Google Drive (or equivalents)

Pay: $66,500.00 - $103,500.00 per year
