What are the responsibilities and job description for the Health Physics Technician position at Valar Atomics?

We are looking for a skilled HPT to provide high-quality radiological support to our operations and maintenance teams. You won't just be a surveyor; you will be a partner in executing work safely. You will be responsible for characterizing hazards, implementing controls, and ensuring that every worker goes home safe.

What You’ll Do

  • Field Operations: Perform comprehensive radiological surveys (radiation, contamination, airborne) to characterize facility conditions.
  • Job Coverage: Provide continuous or intermittent coverage for radiological work, ensuring workers adhere to RWP requirements and stopping work when conditions change.
  • Control & Posting: Establish and maintain radiological postings and access controls. Manage the issue and return of dosimetry and PPE.
  • Instrumentation: Perform daily operability checks and routine maintenance on portable and fixed radiation detection instruments.
  • Emergency Response: Serve as a member of the emergency response team, providing rapid radiological assessment during off-normal events.
  • Documentation: Generate accurate, legible, and detailed survey records and logs that stand up to regulatory scrutiny.

Who You Are

  • Vigilant: You have a questioning attitude and a keen eye for detail. You notice changes in the plant environment before they become problems.
  • Principled: You have the integrity to stop work when it's unsafe, regardless of schedule pressure.
  • Hands-On: You are comfortable working in the field, wearing PPE, and using tools.
  • Team Player: You work effectively with operations, maintenance, and engineering to get the job done safely.

Qualifications

Required:

Education & Experience

  • Associate's degree (or higher) in Health Physics, Radiation Protection, or a related science.
    • OR High School Diploma (or equivalent) AND documented completion of a formal, recognized HPT qualification program (e.g., U.S. Navy ELT, ANSI/ANS-3.1 commercial nuclear qualification, or DOE-HDBK-1122 program).
    • OR Current certification by the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists (NRRPT).
  • Technical Proficiency:

    • Strong understanding of 10 CFR 835 principles (Contamination control, Posting, ALARA, RWPs).
  • Flexibility: Ability to relocate to Utah for operations with potential for travel to Head Quarters in LA.
Preferred

  • DOE Experience: Previous experience at a Department of Energy facility or national laboratory.
