Job Description Summary/Objective:
The Mechanic is responsible for conducting service and maintenance on all vacuum trucks, accessories, and equipment. This role ensures equipment is in optimal condition and ready for rental.
Driving Responsibilities:
Driving is a fundamental requirement of all shop roles at Vac2Go. Employees must safely and efficiently operate vehicles and adhere to all federal and state driving regulations to support daily operations and customer needs
Essential Functions:
- Conduct service and maintenance on all vacuum trucks, accessories, and equipment.
- Drive completion of the Plan of the Day and communicate priorities to team members.
- Assess and document damages to vehicles/equipment.
- Determine training needs of shop members.
- Run diagnostics on all trucks/equipment.
- Review and approve Check-In sheets and confirm external repair needs.
- Perform Check-In/Check-Out procedures.
- Manage inventory of parts and tools and process orders proactively.
- Update daily board to reflect the Plan of the Day for all team members and update it to reflect changes in a timely manner.
- Monitor team members to ensure adherence to safety policies, procedures, and payroll/timecard processes.
- Support the development of the “Plan of the Day.”
- Review the “Plan of the Week” with the Ops Manager.
- Monitor and maintain Fleet Management documentation, ensuring all required paperwork is accurate and on file.
- Maintain accurate and updated documentation in the Fleet Management system for DOT requirements and submit it to the Ops Manager daily.
- Ensure required parts are available or on order before beginning repairs.
- Conduct repairs, overhauls, and maintenance of equipment.
- Utilize industry-standard diagnostics to determine issues and resolutions.
- Apply knowledge in vacuum truck operations including clutch jobs, brake jobs, and A/C work.
- Maintain all mechanical certifications and renew on the required timeline.
- Ensure PM and Inspection Schedules are up to date.
- Run diagnostics and identify the root cause of issues.
- Apply understanding of branch goals to make effective decisions about shop operations and customer support.
- Balance the need for cost efficiency and quality in decision-making.
- Troubleshoot all truck/equipment repair needs.
- Use experience, technical expertise, feedback from team members, and data to make recommendations for improvements.
- Determine internal versus external (billed to the customer) costs.
- Decide whether a repair or replacement is the most efficient solution.
- Identify alternative solutions when the original plan is no longer an option.
- Ensure units are rent-ready before rental.
- Follow up consistently and timely for all customer requests.
- Deliver training about each vacuum truck and equipment type as needed.
- Walk customers through troubleshooting issues.
- Communicate directly with customers to address concerns and resolve problems.

Physical Demands:
- Frequent communication with others; ability to remain stationary for prolonged periods.
- Walking, handling, and reaching with hands and arms.
- Ability to lift to 50 lbs. frequently.
- Climbing in and out of trucks, as well as climbing up onto trucks for cleaning, repair, and/or maintenance purposes.
Travel Required:
- Travel may be required for training or attending industry events.
- Local travel required. Regional travel may occasionally be required to support other branches.
Required education, experience and Driving Requirements:
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- A minimum of 2 years of driving experience in accordance with CDL or Non-CDL requirements is required.
- 1-3 years of experience with both automatic and manual equipment.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and a current DOT certification (CDL or Non-CDL).
- Able to provide 10 years of employment history.
- Proficient knowledge of electrical and hydraulics.
- Ability to operate diagnostic systems and understand results.
- Good communication skills, both written and oral.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Knowledge of Fleet Management and ERP systems.
Work authorization/security clearance requirements:
- Must be authorized to work in the United States.
Manual Lifting Requirements Standard
Manual material handling and movement is a component of almost every single job in our shop. Typically, it involves lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling, gripping, pinching, carrying, and holding objects to some degree, whether by hand or with some form of mechanical lift or assistance. Each of these handling activities exposes the employee and the shop to the potential of personal injury or property damage. To reduce overall injuries, we are aiming our efforts at reducing material handling hazards to our employees.
Vac2Go Ergonomic Guidelines
- The maximum weight to be lifted by one employee with two hands is 50 pounds.
- Two people working together in tandem can lift 50–100 lbs.
- For anything over 100lbs, mechanical means must be used at all times.
- Work within your power zone. Keep weight centered on your torso and as close to your body as practical.
- Avoid twisting and turning while lifting.
- Push versus pull as often as possible.
- Always ensure you know the weight of an object before attempting to lift or carry it.
Types of mechanical means available to assist:
- Forklifts
- Use the appropriately rated forklift.
- Dollies/Pallet movers/Carts
- Do not overload the device.
