This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval, award amount (up to $200,000) & eligibility period one to five years are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.

Qualifications:

***This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until June 30th , 2026 The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be January 19th, 20205 with subsequent cut-off dates on the 1st of each month. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled.***

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR
    [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR
    (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences.
    Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Additional Requirement: Board Certified or Board Eligible Psychiatrist

Preferred Experience: 5 or more years of supervisory experience.

Physical Requirements: This position is predominately an administrative/supervisory position. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. As this position requires a licensed professional, the physical demands remain equivalent to the clinical requirements for the position. The clinical component of this position provides direct services to patients and their families through casework. Incumbents must be physically and mentally able to efficiently perform the essential functions of the position without hazard to themselves or others. Normal work of the position requires visual acuity (with the ability to read typewritten characters without strain, corrective lenses permitted), keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially moderate levels of lifting and carrying. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders.

Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases
Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year & possible 5 day paid absence for CME)

Licensure: 1 full & unrestricted license from any US State or territory
CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification)

Contract: No Physician Employment Contract & no significant restriction on moonlighting
  • Supervises, plans, coordinates, organizes work, sets priorities, delegates tasks, balances responsibilities, & meets multiple deadlines.
  • Knowledge & ability to utilize evidence-based practices & clinical practice guidelines appropriately as stated in medical center bylaws & VHA directives & ability to guide staff in using these tools.
  • Deals effectively with individuals or groups representing widely divergent backgrounds, interests, & points of view using advanced consultation, conflict resolution, & problem-solving skills
  • Manages & directs the work of a large, complex organizational unit & in applies effective management practices to accomplish program goals & objectives.
  • Coordinates the efforts of multiple program elements, translates management goals & objectives into well-coordinated & controlled work operations.
  • Establishes & monitors production & performance priorities & standards. Analyzes organizational & operational problems, develops reporting requirements, & implements solutions that result in sound operation of the program.
  • Assesses need for basic & complex services across multiple programmatic patient care venues.
  • Develops & maintains continuing programs in the area of professional peer review, organizational improvement, continuing education, scope of practice, clinical privileging & other quality improvement activities while working collaboratively with other disciplines.
  • Adheres to computer security & safety requirements.
  • Implements & monitors environment of care procedures, infection control, & health & safety procedures in compliance with VHA, federal, state, & local policies.
  • Participates on multiple Medical Center, VISN & National VA committees.
  • Prepares special reports & responses, Congressional responses, briefing papers, issue briefs, & decision papers ensuring compliance, for the medical center leadership, which may be highly sensitive, confidential, & of a complex nature as requested.
  • Develops policies, procedures, performance standards, position descriptions, & functional statements.
  • Conducts performance appraisals & performs other clinical & administrative responsibilities related to management of staff to ensure that the mission of the service & the medical center has been satisfied.
  • Collaborates effectively with other clinical service leaders in the development & execution of the overarching strategic & business plan, ensuring coordination of services, reduction of redundancies, & enhancement of cost effectiveness.
  • Builds & articulates the department's vision with related goals, strategies, & tactics that promote care delivery that is both of high quality & efficient & that emphasizes Veteran satisfaction.
  • Manages proactively & efficiently a broad continuum of programs including all associated personnel, equipment, supplies, space, contracts, & information system resources.
  • Maintains policies, procedures, & clinical practices that accord with contemporary, evidence-based practices in inpatient & emergency settings meeting national standards as established by VHA, The Joint Commission, & other accrediting bodies.
  • Assembles timely budget formulations, monitors the service line's fiscal activities, & manages fund control points conscientiously.
  • Communicates effectively with all stakeholders, internally & externally.
  • Provides effective leadership to employees.
  • Provide a full range of mental health services which can include individual & group therapy, assessment, & consultation implementing the most appropriate techniques in providing quality care.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8 am to 4:30 pm
