What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Medical Technician position at VA Puget Sound Health Care System?
This position is under the Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. The service, a clinical support service for patients being treated at the Medical Center, provides phlebotomy and support of diagnostic testing at the VA Medical Center in Auburn, WA.
The Selective Placement Factor for this position is: Experience performing phlebotomy/blood draws on human patients. (This experience must be documented in your resume.)

ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
In addition to the requirements listed above, the following is also required:

EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service that includes performing the following duties: a) Technical medical laboratory support work such as performing laboratory tests and examinations (chemical, microbiologic, hematologic and blood banking) and preparing reports of findings or (b) technical support work in a closely related field, e.g., biological laboratory technician work, that required application of the methods and techniques for the position to be filled.
OR
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): Must have successfully completed at least six (6) months of Graduate education or an internship to may be used to meet the specialized experience required. Education is creditable only in those instances where it is directly related to the position.
OR
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED): MUST have equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience to meet the total requirements. Education is creditable only in those instances where it is directly related to the position.

Responsibilities:
***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION***Duties included but are not limited to the following:
- Ensures the work assignments of employees in the team are carried out.
- Works with the Supervisor in the assignment of functions to team members in order to meet routine and unusual deadlines and priorities.
- Prepares schedules and monitors attendance of employees.
- Analyzes and evaluates the performance of phlebotomy staff and reports directly to Supervisor.
- Receives patients for medical laboratory testing collects specimens and evaluates tests for processing determination.
- Performs direct patient care procedures such as collection of lab specimens.
- Collects nasopharyngeal swabs for rapid testing and performs those tests.
- Ensures compliance with established directive and protects the confidentiality of the patients medical records to prevent adverse publicity.
- Provides training to Medical Laboratory Technicians for phlebotomy skills.
- Prepares specimens to be sent to outside laboratories for testing not done at the Medical Center.
- Answers telephone calls and coordinates information and actions relating to patient care and services.
- Receives, validates, processes, and distributes specimens to the proper laboratory section for testing.
- Accurately administers and collects specimens for employee drug screening program.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
