The Program Support Assistant serves the Caregiver Support Program within the VA Maryland Health Care System. The Program Support Assistant demonstrates independence of action, general latitude for decision making and knowledge of information sources concerning complex questions, policies, and procedures within the Caregiver Support Program.

Qualifications:

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 06/08/2026.

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-07 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-06. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience as described below:
  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-06 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: responsible for providing administrative support functions within a healthcare facility; customer service and coordination; data analysis and graphing; develop and maintain financial spreadsheets; maintain databases; reviewing and processing invoices; coordinate and collect necessary data for the program; assist and help coordinate the establishment of the program eligibility/enrollment; assist in maintaining available resources and makes recommendations regarding needs and distribution of resources; coordinate correspondence and assist in the daily operation of the program.

Responsibilities:

Duties to include but not limited to:
  • Prepare, modify and issue all authorizations of care for approved service.
  • Coordinate and collect necessary data for the program.
  • Assist and help coordinate the establishment of the program eligibility/enrollment of the new Veterans/Caregivers.
  • Audit and make corrections to invoices received from the program vendors.
  • Respond to payment inquires or discrepancies from VA approved vendors providers.
  • Responsible for timekeeping of Caregiver Support Program staff and other Social Work program staff.
  • Provide a complete range of program support which includes customer service and coordination, data analysis and graphing, special projects, supporting and helping to organize events, performance measure reporting and compilation of data.
  • Assist program staff through knowledge and understanding of the organization, regulations, methods, and the other tools or recourses of management.
  • Completes other administrative duties as assigned.

Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with CARMA including data input, monitoring dashboards, and pulling reports.
  • Experience with the Caregiver Support Program services and knowledge of Caregiver Support Program policies and procedures.
  • Expertise with MS applications.
  • Experience providing communication and customer service to Caregivers of Veterans.
  • Experience monitoring time and attendance.
  • Experience with ordering and monitoring the use of services, supplied and equipment.
  • Typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute.


Work Schedule: 8:00am-4:30pm, Monday-Friday
