Position Description

The University of Washington School of Medicine is seeking candidates for Chair of the Department of Comparative Medicine (DCM) who will participate in institutional administration, clinical, research, departmental management/finance and teaching activities. The position is full time and tenured at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, commensurate with experience. The responsibilities of this position will be to serve multiple roles in a regulatory, clinical, service, training, and research capacity. The individual will have principal responsibility for management of clinical/pathology and teaching/training activities within the DCM. Close interaction with the DCM Animal Science group will occur in addition to other service-based cost centers within DCM. In addition, there will be substantial responsibilities directed toward regulatory compliance efforts including assuring departmental compliance with Public Health Service (PHS) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) guidelines while maintaining AAALAC International Accreditation. As the University of Washington is a major research institution, there will also be an expectation for research, either principal or collaborative. This position will demonstrate great professionalism, integrity, diplomacy and understanding of the pressures driving those doing research and how animals are affected by this research. This position will also work with and effectively communicate with a wide-range of individuals with varying skill sets and experience, and comply withrelevant regulations while providingclinical/pathology service and/or performing research.This position will be expected to stay up-to-date on relevant regulations and to maintain the ability to provide clinical/pathology service and/or perform research, to allow for a better understanding of the pressures that those working with animals face.The individual will also help to oversee the DCM’s American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) recognized training program in laboratory animal medicine and pathology and may participate in the training of animal care and research staff regarding animal care and use.

Positive factors for consideration:

1. Applicants who are ACLAM board certified and/or ACVP board certified are strongly preferred.

2. Experience in the use and characterization of animal models of human diseases would be an advantage.

3. The addition of a PhD degree (or foreign equivalent) and published evidence of research and other scholarly productivity in a relevant area would be considered an advantage.

4. Applicants with an active state veterinary license in the United States.

The DCM has a faculty of 44 primary, clinical, emeritus, and affiliate veterinarians and scientists who have diverse training and expertise in laboratory animal biology and medicine, veterinary pathology, surgery, internal medicine, and aquatics. Rodents are the primary laboratory animal species under DCM care. DCM faculty research interests are broad and include specific expertise in hematologic cancer, developmental immunology, inflammatory lung disease, innate immunity, inflammatory bowel disease and colon cancer, comparative pathology, nutrition/metabolism, embryonic stem cell biology, and aging. The base salary range for this position will be $17,917 - $24,167 per month ($215,004 - $290,004 annually) commensurate with experience and qualifications, or as mandated by a U.S. Department of Labor prevailing wage determination.

Other Compensation:

Other compensation associated with this position may include an administrative salary supplement for administrative service as chair.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a DVM or VMD (or foreign equivalent) from an AVMA-accredited School of Veterinary Medicine. We seek an individual with at least 10 years of strong and relevant regulatory experience and clinical skills.
