What are the responsibilities and job description for the Community Garden Assistant (LTE) position at UW Madison Extension Brown County?
In 2021, Extension managed 14 gardens with nearly 400 garden plots and 250 gardeners (some gardeners have two plots). Due to demand for garden plots, the program is growing and new gardens will be added and others will be expanded. Assistance is needed in completing task including but not limited to: making sure water tanks are filled, garden plots are planted and maintained, weeding, doing garden repairs, hanging signage, assisting with installation of fencing and responding to questions asked by gardeners.
Essential DutiesMaintain and continue to build relationships with landowners, gardeners, volunteers, and donors.
Empower community gardeners to become more engaged in day-to-day operations of gardens.
Assist with garden tasks including but not limited to making sure water tanks are filled, garden plots are planted and maintained, weeding, doing garden repairs, hanging signage, assisting with installation of fencing.
Respond to questions from gardeners.
Communicate garden issues to Community Garden Coordinator.
Perform duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications RequiredEducation and Experience:
Minimum of High School Degree, Associates Degree preferred in horticulture, agriculture, land scaping and/or experience with gardening or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Wisconsin Driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesKnowledge of gardening.
Knowledge of community resources.
Experience working with limited income, diverse populations.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
Ability to manage time, and work effectively with indirect supervision.
