Summary:

The Director will provide professional expertise and leadership for the Office of Academic Support and Career Counseling in the John Sealy School of Medicine. The incumbent will serve as learning skills specialist by providing evaluations of medical student who experience academic difficulty, may have learning disabilities, and provide career counseling.

Responsibilities:

  • Identifies and tracks the academic progress of all School of Medicine students.
  • Develops criteria for identifying students at-risk for academic difficulty.
  • Meets with at-risk students and those with demonstrated academic difficulty to assess and coordinate assistance based on their needs.
  • Refers students with more complex or multi-factorial problems to University resources when appropriate, including medical and mental health counseling.
  • Oversees the School of Medicine program for tutoring and medical licensing examination preparation.
  • Identifies and track the career development plans of all School of Medicine students.
  • Develops criteria for identifying students at-risk for failing to achieve their career plans.
  • Meets with at-risk students to assess and advise them on career planning techniques and contingency plans based on their needs.
  • Conducts periodic career planning workshops for both students and faculty advisors.
  • Coaches faculty advisors (particularly those in the learning communities) in strategies for helping students with both academic and career needs.
  • Advises Associate Dean for Student Affair and Admissions and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs on all matters related to student academic and career counseling.
  • Adhere to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
  • Expertise in student academic performance assessment and career choice decisions in the health professions.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Excellent skills in organization and prioritization.
  • Ability to identify and balance a range of student needs and priorities.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Education, Educational Psychology, Medicine, or a related field plus five (5) years of experience in academic and/or career counseling.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience providing academic and/or career counseling to health science education students.
